fruit flys in sprouting grains

I just dealt with fruit flies recently that were hanging around the compost bin in the kitchen. After emptying out the bin and hosing it off inside and out, I tried putting out traps with ACV, red wine and a drop of dish soap in a jar, saran wrapped with holes poked on top. It definitely did attract them and a few did get caught and drowned but overall it not as effective as I'd hoped. I was considering getting some fly paper to dangle over the jar, as the flies were hanging around it, but by that point, between the removal of the compost, the trapping, and a whole lot of manually squishing the suckers (yuck) they'd cleared out.

Too bad about the sprouting Amish Pastes Lazy. Glad you have a few left over from last year. I've had seeds sprout on me too. I find it helps to label the container with the day of the week when I set it up. That gives me a clue as to when it will be ready :)

Thanks, Linda. RE: fruit flies. Keep an eye on your sink trap. I do believe that they can also be breeding in the trap. I've had issues where even if there is no fruit out at all, the fruit flies just never go away. Put a bit of bleach or soapy water in the kitchen sink and keep that trap covered for a day or two, and that seems to do the trick.
