Frustrated about the availability of chicks

Pullet coop--that's excellent. The bachelor pad can be temporary until the boys find a home (or freezer).

I think a separate breeding pen would be handy, too.
With all of these coops it may be better to buy a beat up 3 bedroom trailer house, drag it home and set the chickies up in style. It can double as a guest house for that one relative who seems to overextend their welcome. ;)

I have a baby pen in the carport with heaters plus a mama heating pad and even extra heating lights available for the biddies, then they go to a "teenager" pen which has some heat lamp availability (for random cold snaps) and is outdoors but covered. From there they go to a separated area within the coop with no lights where they meet the flock (and learn about rain and coop life). Then they get eased into the whole flock. They will have access to the separate part in case the bigger hens get after them, kind of a creep feeder situation. So my Feb.12 Ideal Hatchery chicks are moving into the creep coop this weekend. Actually less complicated than it sounds and allows me a way to plan when I can get chicks because, well, chicken math.

Things You'll Need or Wish You Had:

A brooder with light, heater and feeders, waterers and temp gauges
A chick 'playpen' to let the babies out during the day to get sunshine
A coop and run with roosts, nest boxes, feeders, waterers and grit
A coop and run for the broody with chicks with feeders and waterers
A quarantine coop and run to isolate new, injured or sick chickens

Oh, the things we do for all of those "Free Eggs!" :D

No shortage of bantams this season it seems. Husband has come home with 2 clutches of tiny birds in the past month.
I love my banties! Sure, the eggs are smaller, but you can have more birds (and pretty much the same amount of feed!) in the same space, so it all evens out.

I'm excited for them to experience the great outdoors. They are so fun and full of spirit (6 OEGB)<-- I'm guessing
And then 6 feather footed bantams. These critters are much more relaxed and quiet.

One for each rooster…mine started fighting. I now have four coops, each with a rooster and x amount of hens. Twenty-one birds total.

I will never hatch again. Though two of the roosters were dumped by my yard…still, it’s all their fault Jen went broody and hatched out two more roos!

A hatchet or similar chicken-killing tool, plus some good chicken recipes, for when all those pens are too full.

I went to Dollar General and got some stuff and I showed the 2 ladies there the picture of my ducklings. One said "Yes, I want ducks," I told her stick to chickens, they are easier to keep and less messy and stinky. I love my ducklings but I won't get any more. If I have a drake then he can make more but I'm not going to buy more. I'm giving them advice on gardening so I should probably decide to just give them my address and have them stop by to let them experience chickens, chicks and ducklings first hand. They will also get some more information on gardening.
