Frustrated about the availability of chicks

In the south, they stop shipping chicks when it gets hot, so May is the last month I've seen chicks in the stores. Sometimes April... it depends. Then they get chicks in again in October, and that's it.
But we have a lot of members in Texas... check out your state thread, there may be someone nearby who has nice breeds available when you are ready!
Thank you for your info! The "new" coop should be done in the next week or 2. I didn't know about the state threads, but I'll take a look there!

I finally got my chicks today at Oakman Farm in Western PA. I usually buy older started pullets but gave up after 6 month an went the chick route which were also very hard to locate. TSC has been selling out in hours. An update on Facebook showed that Oakman sold out after 4 hours. I was early and scored a Speckled Australorp, Black Majesty Maran, Easter Eggers and Buff Orpingtons, 6 chicks in all.
I think recession worries are driving the scarcity.

I'm facing problems from the other side of the "No-Chicks-To-Be-Had" issue. I tried to break a young broody for nearly two months, but finally gave up & let her set. She has nearly finished with seven of her original nine eggs remaining. They're all bantams and will be straight run, but people are already vying for them. The two "fighting" hardest have NO clue about raising or keeping chickens, but I'll have family/work "political" issues if I bypass them for someone who is actually prepared for chicks. So ... I hadn't planned on keeping any of these, but it looks like I'm adding to my flock.

You know that little angel that sits on everybody's shoulder? Mine is Murphy's cousin! Don't laugh, he has a BIG family and they move around a LOT! Don't get me wrong; I'm glad he's here. I just wish he wasn't so busy and didn't have such a twisted sense of humor. The way this year is shaping up, I'm expecting all seven egglets to hatch some time next week ... into seven adorable little cockerels!

Are they looking for chickens for ‘free eggs?’ Maybe just offer them some eggs if they come over and help clean the coop/fill feeders/perform other chicken chores for a weekend? You’d have to train them up, but it might give them enough experience to either realize chickens aren’t for them or know what they’re doing if they manage to get their hands on some chicks regardless.

I’ve got an order coming this week from Meyers. Hopefully no shipping issues and they all get here on time and in good health. It normally takes 2 days to get an order from them. The confirmation email shows they shipped my entire order with no shortages or exchanges.
Fingers crossed!
