Frustrated: lost my new silkie:Update!!!!

I had a couple chicks (10 weeks or older) get loose when they squeezed out of a place under the run . . . both times I found them hiding in dark covered places. The first one didn't go far - hiding behind some wooden panels I had propped against a wall in the barn. The second one had probably gotten chased by my free-range roosters and was hiding a little farther away - behind OTHER panels propped up outside the livestock paddock

. The second time I was clued in by the roosters, who were roosting as close as they could to the chick! I tried to lure her out with food but she was too scared. I left and kept watch out the window. As it started to get dark, she "roosted" on a roll of fencing close to her hiding spot and I caught her. Silkies usually "roost" on or near the ground.

Hope you catch your lovely girl!

And your daughter is learning from your distress. I bet she will try to be more careful next time.

The Lisser probably has something there. I would bet she wouldn't have gone too far. See if you can see a dark hidey hole near where she went out of the fence.

There's an entry way into under my front stairs right near where she got out...I checked there first, but there's a section that I can't see. I'll send DH out once my baby goes to bed and see if he can find her...hopefully none of the neighbors get spooked by the guy running round with a flashlight haha.

Mine are used to me running around in the wee hours of the morning chasing blasted dogs away. Last week one killed one of my feral cats. God I hate that. I tried so hard to get him used to me but he wouldn't have anything to do with me. I wanted to get him moved around the the front of my house where they have better protection from the picket fence. I hope your hubby finds a dirty out-of-sorts chickie soon!

Found the bird!!! She was just wandering around the backyard this morning. We trapped her under some patio furniture, and shessafe again. Again, the silly thing did not run from me once we got indoors.

strange thing!

We still have no clue where she was last night but we are glad to have her back! Thanks everyone for the support!

I'm glad she came back.
Had a similar thing happen last summer with a RIR.
The next day I watched where she headed at dark so I would know her hiding place. Had to carry her to the coop for a few weeks till she started going back on her own.

Imp- They can hide in some pretty small places.

Not so silly really. My birds are all much more flighty outside. They are more wary of things moving and especially birds flying over head. My roos are much more alert and watchful as well. Once everyone is inside they are noticebly calmer and more relaxed.

I just chalk it up to instincts. Inside is safe, outside there could be danger.

I could be completely wrong, I'm just guessing.

I'm so glad you found your silkie. I have wanted some lavenders, they are so pretty. Congrats to you.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking she was holed up under the stairs, in a corner I couldn't see...we were out there searching the block with flashlights and everything and it was COLD. Really glad she was "smart" enough to find her way back into my yard, especially since we just got her. I'll update with some pictures later, she may not be the best example of a lav, but she is really cute.

Thank goodness! I worried about your chickie. Isn't it so dang frustrating when they don't understand you are just trying to help them? I wasn't going to open this thread till I saw your exclamation marks. I figured it was good news!
