frustrated with my goslings! they don't like me

They're doing MUCH better (and so are we). They follow me or my wife around when we're out, they'll eat treats from our hands (mostly fresh kale or grape leaves) and can go in and out of their "house" just by us giving them the signal. They still don't go in all on their own at dusk, but I don't know if that will ever be possible.

Sounds like you have done a great job with them. Mine usually don't go in on their own I just slowly walk behind them and they get the message.

I have to agree with ducky on this one. If you don't put forth the effort and even to an extreme, you can't expect them to really do more than basically tolerate you and your presence. Sorry if that's harsh. Cas adores me, follows me everywhere, loves being held, touched and loved on. BUT this is because I've spent nearly every waking moment with him doing these things. Now he hurt his leg and he can't stand me out of his sight because to him I'm MaMa and he needs me. If you get geese and toss them in a pen outside only to visit a time or two daily to feed and such, how can you honestly expect more of them? I don't mean to sound rude, but you get back what you put in. Sorry if that hurts.

Now lets not go telling everyone the only way you can get your geese to actually LIKE you and be friends with you is to spent every moment with them. My Fabulous Fourteen group adores me, at least I think they do.

The group is a mix of 4.5 and 3 week olds, they lived in the garage up until they were 3 weeks and 2.5 weeks, I would give them water and food every four hours or whenever their containers were empty, and I would take them outside for thirty minutes twice a day. Now that they're living outside I do not see them as much, but when I do go out there every gosling, even the ones that were scared of me at first, run up and greet me. They do not scatter when walk through them, they don't run when I reach for them, and they will gladly accept being picked up.

I think really it's how you behave around them. If you act confident, happy, and NOT SCARY around them, they will really take to you. But if you're nervous or frustrated or scared, they will react. They're amazingly smart and sensitive birds!

It is definitely never too late to befriend a goose.

I thought that the only reason Pear(r.i.p.) loved me was because he was imprinted on me, but I took my seventeen week old gander inside yesterday because he was FILTHY and I needed to actually clean him, but after his bath we were sitting in my room just watching TV and he cuddled up to my leg just like Pear did. This goose was NOT imprinted on me, he definitely knows that he is a goose, he thinks Kiwi and Mango are his parents. You can always insert yourself into a goose's life, and they CAN see you as a friend!!!!!!!! <3 <3

I have to apologize for my post to a degree because my phone hadn't refreshed and shown the new posts on them doing better now, so I do apologize for my bit of rant. I've had numerous pm's from ppl begging me to explain my "secret" and I kinda snapped. I'm sorry...

As for Cas idk what happened. I think he sprained or twisted it yesterday jumping out of his pool to chase a squirrel. He's fine in every other way, just super favoring the bad leg. Its not swollen or hot and I don't feel any break. Right now he's confined to his kennel with his food n water right within easy reach so he doesn't have to move much. Should I give him some infant aspirin or something?

I personally don't believe in giving animals pain medicine if it's not too serious because then you can't ever know how bad it may actually be hurting them! Since they can't talk and tell us like oh it stopped hurting after I took the medicine, now the medicine is wearing off, etc. I think I would just keep giving him nice warm baths to 1. Get him off that leg and 2. Warm water feels good when you're in pain!

Maybe Ms. L can give you better advice than me??? Hope he's ok

Just updating that Cas is much better today. He's still favoring the one leg but is standing and moving around a lot more. He's still confined to his play pen so there's nothing to have to step over. I'm so happy he seems to be such a fast healer!!
