I have three chicks hatched April 18 and two May 1 in the same brooder, all get along great and it’s been warm here in central Florida so I haven’t had a heat source for them and they’ve seemed comfortable otherwise. However I was wondering if anyone has ever put full spectrum plant lights over their chicks? I’d love for them to get real sunlight, but the first (and only) time I tried to take them outside they almost got eaten by a snake. While I was standing right there! I kicked at it and it still kept coming, in one fell swoop I scooped them all up and hurried inside. It scared me to say the least. Not of the snake but just the fact it was that adamant to get one of my babies. Since then I’ve let them roam loose in my spare room for some exercise, I have a bin with dirt in it for them to roll around/scratch in, and now it dawned on me to put the plant lights over them during daylight hours. I was mostly curious if anyone else has done this, and if they noticed positive results. Thanks!

I also started leaving them in the living room during the day since they are covered (my doberman is clearly “too” interested) to become accustomed to comings and goings, then they go back into the quiet back room for nighttime. I also leave a screened window open.
