I was going to make a swing for ours with a 2x4 and some chain. I read somewhere that it helps to strengthen their wings and legs to have to balance. It is also more interesting for them. I don't know if I will though. Our run is 6 ft high and about 300sqft. It's covered by hardware cloth and I wonder if they start flying off and on the swing they might get injured. A swing out in the open I think they would love!

It seems to me that scratching on the ground is a chicken's favorite past time, especially if it's new ground (or looks new to them). Throwing down a bag of leaves in the run makes my chickens go wild. Suddenly the run is interesting again. Who knows what treasures might be lurking under those leaves? When the weather is good, I put the flock in a tractor that I move around our yard every day so they can get fresh grass to eat and scratch in.

Dustbathing is their second favorite pastime, followed by preening while roosting.

Oh, yes, leaves!

Tons of them have collected in lower dips of the bird netting over the run, so I've dumped them out onto the ground and the chickens were ecstatic with the windfall! (Now, that's an effective use of that word. LOL!)

leaves is great. I also plan to throw in any slugs etc I find in my garden...

wolfandfinch - I think there is a recipe on here somewhere to make flock blocks. You should have plenty of slugs in your garden and if they get too bored you get always take them for a walk in Stanley Park LOL!!

I get a seed block for wild birds (they have different nut nseed mixes) break it up a bit and toss the bits in different spots.
They peck to get their favorites out first.
Also, when weather is good they get to free range.
