So my friends, here is the report from our vet visit!

We had a relatively peaceful transport. The vet scooped out the infected area in her mouth, did cytology looking for yeast or bacteria and found general bacteria!

He said there was probably a small cut or injury that allowed the bacteria to be introduced.

He sent us home w/ doxycycline & I will pull her eggs for a while. Luckily she is our only Americauna who lays a very bright blue egg & not very often.

He did say that there is a chance that she has osteomyelitis (if the infection has gone into the bone). In this case the doxy may not be enough to make it go away.

Thanks again for the suggestions & support!!:hugs

Thank you for the update and I hope the medicine works.
Good luck.

Glad that you could see a vet. Did the lesion in her beak have a really bad odor? Was he able to rule out canker, a protozoan infection, as well diagnose the bacterial infection? I would ask if there could have been protozoa present as well. It sure looks a lot like pictures I have seen of canker. Metronidazole (Flagyl, Fish Zole) is the recommended treatment, and the vet might want to treat as well for that, along with the doxy. Thanks for sharing your experience.
