Fungus like stuff around vent New Pictures (Pretty Gross)UPDATE

The vet gave me some Septra (antibiotic) and she has been on that for two days. She is eating some, and I've been putting anti fungal creme on her vent. Her vent is not swollen any more, or pulsating. She still has some of the dark stuff on it that looks like a growth. She has been eating some. She doesn't seem to have much of an appetite and has lost quite a bit of weight. She did eat some duck maint. yesterday and one boiled egg. Today we go to the vet. There are only two vets here and one of them knows more about birds but she doesn't work as much as the other. I had to wait until she was in. Her knowledge is limited too. She said she would sedate Angel and pull a piece of that growth off and send it to the lab to see what it is. I am keeping her in the house away from the other ducks. She can reach her vent, so I imagine she has eaten some of that creme I hope that won't harm her. I will let you know what the vet has to say.

Don't worry to much of the cream she may have eaten. Over the counter products are not very high in their dose. I would think the cream may cause diarrhea, if any issues at all. Try to increase her protein intake by adding yogurt to her food. Antibiotics can cause loss of appetite. I hope she will be fine. Only time will tell.

If she won't eat yogurt try her on kefir, my ducks won't eat yogurt but for some reason they will eat kefir.. both have the needed probiotics, please let us know what they find out about Angel,

Thanks for the guidance and updating me Tia. I've just bathed Della and she does get distressed, bless her, put honey on it again, but it's really bad. She is eating and quite happy though, other than this fugal stuff she is really fit, healthy and happy bless her. I'm just scared about when she tries to lay an egg, so I think I'm going to have to try to find a vet. When I try to pull some of the stuff off she is in discomfort

Took her to the vet. She said it doesn't look like fungus to her. She said there was no sign of mites either. She put her out and took some blood. Also took a slide of the stuff on her vent, and cleaned the vent up a little. She said it looked internal, like it was growing under the skin. She said the blood work would be back the end of the week, but she won't be back into the office until early next week. She is going out of town for the weekend. She said to keep her on antibiotics for 5 days then take her off. I will call her next week. She was slow waking up which worried me a bit, but she gave her a little oxygen and then she woke up. I didn't realize it was so difficult drawing blood from a duck. She tried her wing first, then her neck, but ended up getting it out of her leg. Poor little Angel must feel a little like a pin cushion.

I will go to the health food store and get some kefer. Thanks. I think the important thing now is to get her to eat more. I'm sure she misses her buddies, but that never kept her from eating before.

Yes, as hard as you've worked to help your little darling, hopefully the blood work will finally give you a definitive answer. Home remedies have their uses, and heaven knows we poultry fanatics need to rely on them at times, but there comes a point where only the professionals can help any more. You've done a phenomenal job of loving and caring for Angel, and you and she deserve some respite. Keep us updated qua what the vet says and how she's doing. And as others on here have noted, the yogurt or kefir should help with the appetite issue, since it's likely from the antibiotics upsetting her tummy. BTW, I know general consensus is to use the plain yogurt, but mine will only eat the berry flavored, so I get the sugar free (the sugar can contribute to fungus problems - definitely don't want that at this point!). Mine won't touch kefir - they look at it like I'm trying to feed them poo or something! Someone else I know and trust uses buttermilk; her birds love it; haven't tried it on mine. We make our own using live culture yogurt to inoculate it, but you should be able to find live culture brands at the grocery store.

YoPlaid makes a plain greek yogurt that has twice the protein. You can also puree up some peas and mix it in to get her started. Don't forget to offer grit on the side while she is indoors. BTW Kefir is a fungus and not a bacteria like yogurt. It still doesn't matter, because both are good and contain protein.

I crushed up some strawberries and put some plain Keifer in it. I think she mostly picked the strawberries out, but I'm sure she got some of the Keifer too. I will try peas, she loves peas.
