Fungus like stuff around vent New Pictures (Pretty Gross)UPDATE

Ummm. since when does an animal (of any sort) get "worms" from earthworms? I would question this vets ability to diagnose anything. I would get another opinion before treating your duck based on "her" information. Be careful !

I have heard of earthworms being able to carry tapeworms, but I didn't like the sound of what this vet was doing either...that, and the fact that the poster STILL doesn't know what's really going on with the duck after all that!

I'm not sure. She is very upfront about not being familiar with birds. I thought I was fortunate that she was willing to try. She consulted with the lab, and I believe is going with their suggestion about possible worms. I think Angel was a bit stressed with the blood draw. She didn't want to stress her any further. It was scary, but she survived it. I live 300 miles away from the nearest large city and a vet that is more familiar with birds. She is now back on antibiotics and I am getting silvadene on Monday to put on her vent. has anyone ever used flubenvet with ducks???

Flubenvet 2.5% poultry wormer is a medicated feed supliment commonly used to worm chickens, turkeys and geese. It is not licensed for use with ducks although many people do use it. There is separate information on Worming Ducks here.
As I said... don't believe your "vet" if they re not trained in aviary sciences.

I've also heard of birds getting parasites from earthworms, especially gapeworms. Killdeer eat a lot of earthworms and I think they pick up a few things from them.

According to this site: http://poultrykeeper.com/waterfowl-ducks-geese/waterfowl-health/worming-ducks.html

Duck
feces, containing worms are picked up by ducks dabbling and feeding and transferred to intermediate hosts (such as earthworms) in the soil.

also this from another site:

Earthworms and also snails, slugs, ants, flies and beetles are often the intermediate hosts for various internal parasites of birds; so winter is a good time to use medication.

It is very possible for ducks, other animals and people really to get parasites from ingesting earthworms or eating raw fish. Bladder worms and Kidney worms come to mind when thinking about earthworm parasites.
