When I was an electrical apprentice in the mid 70s, we were putting smoke alarm systems in all the telephone relay buildings. The key word being 'relay' which was an electrical switch(s) that routed the calls. There were hundreds of thousands of these relays in each of these buildings and it always sounded like a tin roof in a hail storm.
The day they switched over to solid state electronics (even before computerization) it paid for itself before the day was over!
The rotary dial would make clicks to correspond to the number you "dialed" and the equipment would rout the call based on this.

Also, some of y'all may not remember that calling "long distance" cost extra. (A lot!)
Calling overseas was a luxury.
