We had a great little GSL girl (sadly, killed by an unknown predator back in September) named Lacey. This girl is so sorely missed, for her sense of humor and adventurous nature, if nothing else.
As some of you may know, my husband, Denny, and I have been building our log home for the better part of 2 1/2 years now. One of the first things Lacey discovered that was fun to do (at least to her little birdie brain I suppose) was to wander into the house if one of us happened to leave the door open. Strangely enough, before we installed the doors and windows, she never bothered to come into the house at all. But, after the doors were in, oh boy, that was just too enticing to pass up any time the door was left even slightly ajar. She'd come in, all on her own, make a complete circuit of the ground floor, checking each and every room thoroughly, before she'd wander back out.
After every visit, she'd then return to the flock and I swear, as I live and breathe, she was giving everyone an update on the progress of the new coop!
Everyone would gather around her and listen intently to what she had to say.
Gosh! I do so very much miss our little Lacey!
There will never be another girl quite like her. Here's a quick pic of her. Can't you just see the inquisitive nature in her eyes? Yeah, she's the one looking intently into the camera lense!
The other story that comes to mind is their dust bath hen parties. Now, I've explained repeatedly and very concisely, that mamma's flower beds are NOT suitable places for such a gathering!
And as many times as I have chased them out of there, you would think that they would have gotten the hint much sooner than they did! Actually, they never did get the hint. It finally took installing a small wire fence around all of my bulb beds, which I later had to back up with bird netting on account of the gaps in the wire fencing were such that the youngest birds could still get in there. Who ever would have thought such young birds could do so much damage!
So, after restricting access to the flower beds, that left the girls in search of a suitable area in which to take their daily dust baths. And I'm not kidding here! You could see that this was the project at hand with these girls! Daily, they went out every morning and searched high and low, across nearly the entire 11 acres out here, in search of the perfect dust bath location. About 2 weeks after I installed the fences, they finally found it. And you'll never guess where they finally found it!
Under the table saw, for crying out loud!! I guess the sawdust makes an excellent dust bath. And as often as we use that piece of equipment, there's almost always a guaranteed supply of fresh dust, winter, spring, summer and fall!
So, you tell me. Does this look like a hen party to you, or what?
Our hens love it when DH works in 'The Shop". They wait til he walks out into the main part of the barn and then they dash in to see what he has been doing.
I think that they know that what he is usually doing is building something for them...lol...nest boxes, new pens, new roosts etc.
One day one of them got too curious and jumped up onto the trash can...you know, the kind with the flippy lid. She landed, the lid flipped and we heard SQUAWK!!!
DH took the lid off only to find her giving him the stink-eye as though to say "And, you think this is funny?" She marched herself out of the shop and then proceeded to tell all of the girls about the incident. I know this because when DH came out of the shop again, he got the stink-eye from the whole flock!
Serrin,
Your hens are definitely having a hen party under the saw table!!! They are even waitingfor their turn. I love the photo angle you got of them as if they're in line trying to see what's happening at the party!
