[Recuperating. Am pottering about.]
Felicity was doing an odd thing: booming while on her knees. I stayed to watch, and Funny Patches emu stepped into sight. Remember him? If I were well enough, I’d start a journal, and try to get data on territoriality.
Observations are even more interesting now: knowledge plus data equals more knowledge. I know now that the reason I couldn’t find Peter Parent Emu’s nest is because an emu nest without the emu on it is almost nothing: the shell is scattered; there’s none of the ‘ring’ of feathers and sticks that we see in picture books. Just a flat spot on the ground, and a few feathers and shards of shell.
[Something, probably a fox, has dragged off one of the two abandoned eggs. I saw distinct scratch marks on both of them the day before it disappeared.]
Funny Patched is definitely following Felicity around. He ran out of the clearing when he saw me. Then Felicity moved steadily around the clearing, booming all the while, ‘til F.P. re-appeared. Then he definitely followed Felicity. I wonder what that’s all about.
Greedy stayed away six days after the afternoon she left as ‘escort’ to Boy Emu plus Five. We don’t know that she stayed any time at all with them; but we do know, from my observations, that she did show some interest in B.E. in the last couple of days before the hatching began, and that she sat from dawn to dusk by the nest during the hatching.
No sight of B.E. plus Five.
