After another disasterous hatch (finally figured it out when I decided to incubate duck ordered 3 batches of 6 eggs from different and received 18 eggs with detatched or loose air sacks-now im candling prior to incubation...) I ended up with 2 coturnix and 14 button quail. I have now chosen my four buttons that are staying, the other 10 went to their new homes today at 2 weeks old and I thought that was a good time to thoroughly clean their brooder without the worry of 14 buttons escaping! So I used a wire divider in the coturnix brooder and put the buttons in their with them. Needless to say 5 minutes after putting them in one of the buttons managed to move the divider enough to wriggle through. I was about to seperate them when it dived straight between their legs and snuggled down. Weirdly the coturnix just settled on it. I removed the divider and the other three beelined for them and they settled into a fluffy bundle with heads peeking out. I even saw one of them grooming the button quail!! Is that normal?! They hatched together and then were seperated instantly and are all 2 weeks old.

Unfortunately I never have my phone on me at the best times, button no. 4 I s actually under them all. Scuse the brooder mess, was just coming to clean out when i saw picture possibility and had my phone. If I get too close they get excited and bounce up. Have to say the japs best behaviours are passing to the buttons, the japs have always been very tame and eager to look for food on me whereas the buttons scatter, now they all crowd over to see if there is treats! Im also interested as to whether the japs are more likely to be broody after this mock b parenting bit! They groom the buttons and share food happily.
