I think the majority of Americans, including the dominate white Christian American, are honest reasonable people who don't want anything to do with the hot headed unreasonable people who are causing such a dust up in the media, politics and so on.
I agree. The majority of Americans are exactly as you say. Our media is rampant with the haters though and they have a very big influence. They actually have some people believing that our POTUS is a Muslim instead of a Christian and that the majority of Muslims practice sharia law so that America will someday be run that way. It's craziness. Personally I don't care what religion our POTUS is as long as it doesn't influence the way they administer the country.
There are people in our Congress right now, that would love to see Muslims rounded up and put in camps like the Japanese during WWII. To me that is scary.
