I think often people who act like that towards people of other groups do it out of ignorance.
9 times out of ten, (IME) people who assume that all Muslims are extremists do not know any Muslims personally.

Extremism, of any kind, Muslim, Christian, Democrat, Republican, is what is causing so much trouble in this world, it leads to anger and hot heads and rash actions as well as closed minds.

If people made more of an effort to put themselves in the shoes of others and walk with others outside of their own comfort zones...More Christians walking with Buddhists to learn about them, More Druids walking with Christians to learn about them, and so on, I think there would be a lot less infighting and a lot more people sitting down and having Coffee, or tea or water.

I learned a lot from my friend I mentioned in my OP, including how to counter hatred with good nature, because as she pointed out, countering anger with anger, only created an explosive situation.

I disagree with Islam, but gotta say, good for her!

That was quick. Always fun to embarrass morons.

I don't think people quite get that most Muslims are not at all radical. What the Koran says on the matter is up for debate, but most Muslims as people are perfectly moderate. (Although I must say, their clothing looks like it would be horribly uncomfortable in a hot climate)

I agree with you that some people don't understand it, but I think it's human nature to put something in a black or white bracket when they first encounter it. I think with time, people will begin to loosen up, as they have with other cultures.

It's Qur'an, (That's a pretty common interpretation though, so don't feel bad, and my friend had to show me how to spell it too.) and like all cultures, Their dress changes per culture, climate and nation.

Most groups have people that stick to a ridged dress code, like the Amish that dress a certain way, and the Hasidic (Spelling?) Jews who dress a certain way. The Hijab, head covering, really isn't that different from modesty head coverings from certain Christian and Jewish groups.

(Don't confuse the Hijab which usually just covers the hair and sometimes drapes down to cover the bodice chest or shoulders with the Burka which completely covers the head and face)

I have seen so many different ways to spell Qur'an that I have no idea which one is right.

And yes, I was thinking of the burka - that has GOT to be sweltering. Saw several folks wearing them while on vacation in SC last summer.

I think a lot of the people that are currently the majority are worried about losing the majority status. Did you ever see that old episode of Star Trek where they go to a planet occupied by people that are white and black. One group is black on the right half and white on the left half. The other group is a mirror image. They have the same roots but have been at war for years just because they are different from each other. I think it's just a human condition and takes a lot of work to overcome. Eventually the (inappropriate name calling removed by Staff) will be so severely outnumbered they will become totally quiet. They used to be able to speak out in public in whatever way they wanted. Now most of them have to speak in code while in public. Eventually even code won't be accepted.

We'll get there someday.

Well done on both of their parts. Had I been there to witness that encounter, my caucasian, christian self would have reacted less graciously. I'm not proud of that fact.

Praise be to Allah....I can't wait for the enacting of Sharia law, and the proper place of women, in society...Oh, yeah, the occasional stoning or whipping, in the public square. Now, that would be something to laugh about.

We don't want to get too extreme towards the majority either. This isn't an us against them thing. We're all struggling imperfect human beings with differing opinions and beliefs with extremists in each of our groups. I don't look forward to a day where any group is marginalized.
I think the majority of Americans, including the dominate white Christian American, are honest reasonable people who don't want anything to do with the hot headed unreasonable people who are causing such a dust up in the media, politics and so on.
