You must have a hen house for all the reasons already posted!
You can do a simple coop by yourself. Your hubby sounds like mine....but I built a 12x8' coop/potting shed with a 20'x17' covered run in spite of his stubborness (which is nothin' compared to mine...

) with help from a neighbor. It took awhile but it looks great. Enlist some help with the heavy stuff though.

I designed the chicken coop but want to know what everyone thinks of it. Im going to do it without hubby's help. Hubby's brother in law said he will help me out during his break from work (works at the bus garage for the school. he is off between 9am to 1pm).

There you go! Help from a friend might make him step up but then again maybe not. Either way, if you're able, do the majority of the work yourself and use your friend to help with the heavy lifting etc. Good luck and keep us posted. BTW when are you due?

Just wanted to walk into some dangerous territory here! Husbands aren't the only ones who take no interest in Chickens

My wife hates birds of all kinds and had no interest in any part of building a coop. Won't feed or water or even let them out!

I think it depends on your location. Are in you in the middle of the city or in a more rural area - do you have predators where you live?

You live in Florida, right? We are in AZ and definitely did not want a 'real' coop because if would have been way too hot for our chickens during the summer. We built a 3 sided coop/shelter and attached it to a covered dog run (you can see it on my BYC page). My mom used to live in Young, AZ (where they occasionally get snow,) and still didn't have a 4 sided, enclosed coop. She had a shelter for them that protected the chickens from rain, snow, & wind - the cold didn't seem to bother them.

There are several people I know here in my town that don't even have a coop or run (most yards here are enclosed by tall fences). Their chickens free-range safely and sleep in trees (but these chicken owners live in the middle of the city with no chicken predators around). I have mine in an enclosed run because we have a dry wash behind us that does have wildlife in it.

I'm not saying you don't need a coop, but you might want to check with other chicken owners in your area and see what's been working for them. Your climate & wildlife situation makes a big difference as to what you can get away with or even what would work best for you.

Oh, I am definitely in Rural area. LOL. The closes town is 15 to 30 min away and we are covered with predators. We have hawks, vultures, raccoons, bob cats, cougars, and neighbors' dogs. I told him I just want a wooden box-like coop to keep them in at night, mostly.
