Good morning, and welcome to BYC.
When my husband suggested chickens I was not in favor. I worried about rodents. After he convinced me, I really got into the research. He built a fort knox and we started with an adult flock of hens. I fell in love and they became mine. Now I have a backyard full of them.
P.s. cats will help keep the rodent population down and the hens will take care of the bugs.

Thanks for all the replys, now where to start... Well, I plan on having 2 ISA Browns (Red Star chickens) supposedly they lay some of the largest eggs, very good mannered, cold hardy. I'm liking the Ameraucana's chickens, same as above, hardy in all ranges of climate. Here in Central Indiana, it's been in the low single digits for the last week and in the summer it can hit high 90's. A friend of mine who has chickens, said to try and get one black chicken. Hawks don't like black chickens, I guess it reminds them of crows. And my last choice is Golden Laced Wyandotte.

I know there are a wide range of chickens that fall into the above category and if I can't find the one I want, there will be another one to take it's place and stay within the dream.

I'm not afraid to get dirty. I've been in landscaping and maintenance for nearly 35 years. I've also had jobs like working in a fish plant, cutting fish, I was the head filleter for the business. Also was a field slaughter-man for a local butcher. Beef, goat, sheep, pork, and occasionally chickens. I've raised rabbits and pigs for several years. Taught my kids how to butcher rabbits. So for cleaning out the coop and runs, I don't see a problem. I have a compost pile that i turn frequently that is just waiting for some of that fresh chicken poo.

My space for the chicken run and coop is 12' x 11'.

I tend to get long winded sometimes.
