Future Chicken Breeder in Washington - Just Getting Started

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies!
I've already gotten lost in some egg color debates and finding someone with a similar sick chicken situation. So much to explore!
Thank you for the kind welcome, it is great to be here ^_^

Columbian wyandottes are very sweet. I had a hen like that and a polish. (I have many different types.) I had a friend that wanted to have just 5 hens for his coop. I did give him my columbian, and my polish, because they were both being picked on. I think they are happy now.
My Wyandottes tend to be top of the pecking order, so it is interesting to hear you've experienced one that is lower. They are super sweet and curious in general though and I look forward to breeding more of them with some specific crosses to make them less heat sensitive and more capable of evading predators while improving their meat quality. Polish are definitely at the bottom of every pecking order and no surprise with those headfeathers and chickens being so OCD about such things. I loved my Polish dearly and they are by far the cutest chicks ever... but they have so many problems. Oh well, these are the things that must be learned.

Hi all! I have been reading threads on BYC for a while but am joining for the first time because I want to become part of the discussions and not only find fellow poultry lovers who are just as passionate as me, but get more info about the projects I am working on and contribute what I already know when time allows. I'm an educator at heart and hope to be one in a more real sense in the future, as there can never be enough enthusiastic and curious teachers in the world!
Forever a student, sometimes a teacher, but always learning and growing.

Current breeds in development: Columbian Wyandotte, Black Copper Marans, Crested Cream Legbar, Olive Egger

Also have: Buff Orpington, Easter Egger, Welsummer
Previously had: Barred Plymouth Rock, Polish
Still waiting for: White Plymouth Rock, Bresse, Light Sussex

Favorite breeds are Columbian Wyandotte and Cream Legbar, and least fav is definitely POLISH! Those poor birds... They should not exist!
Hi, and welcome! You have some nice breeds. I have an Easter Egger and a Prairie Bluebell and am eagerly awaiting their first eggs. They are the first non-brown egg layers we have.

Oooh the first colored eggs are so exciting! It is like being gifted gemstones from your hens. I have to admit it never gets old for me, I adore rainbow eggs
