Hi Everyone,

My beloved and I are in the process of procuring our retirement home at Sapphire Beach Resort and have some land on Ambergris caye, Belize to develop. In addition to many, many things that we wish to have we have a "Texan" desire to raise beautiful chickens for both eggs and poultry meat for the island. Not on a big scale but probably on a gourmet scale.

What types of chickens are available for purchase in Belize and are successful in this type of endeavor.

Looking forward to meeting fellow "chicken lovers" on Ambergris Caye and in Belize in the near future.

Thanks.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Sorry I have no idea what breeds would be available in Belize. The only gourmet breed of chicken I have read about is a Bresse.

glad you have joined us.

If you search Belize there have been a number of folks post from that area.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I don't think we even have a Belize thread, but you might check out this page in our archives. There are a few members from your country out there. Not sure when they were on BYC last, but you might PM some of these members and see what they suggest.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=belize

Make yourself at home here and we do welcome you to our flock!

Hello and Welcome! I don't know much about Belize, so I suggest you check out the link provided by Twocrows. I hope you find some birds!

Hi Tanzee! I'm a chicken lover here on the island as well! The chickens in Belize are sold in 3 different categories:

1. "Local chickens" -- This is a catch-all term for the mixed breed, backyard chickens you'll see all over the country. They come in black, barred, and multi-color mixes. The majority seem to be australorps and naked necks (my personal favorite). I have found them to be good, daily layers who tend to stay on the small side. They make up the majority of my flock.

2. "Laying chickens" -- These are medium-to-large buff hens that are used for commercial egg production in Belize. I believe they are wyandottes. The farm stores will tell you they are RIR, but they are DEFINITELY not RIRs.... (They are just using that term to mean buff colored). I get about 5 large eggs / week from my layer, but she also goes broody quite a bit. I've let her raise a few clutches with success.

3. "Broiler chickens" -- These are HUGE cornish crosses intended for meat production. They grow quickly and are pretty aggressive.

I will try to post some pictures soon. All of the breeds are just my best guess, so maybe we can have some others weigh in as well!
