We just purchased 5 acres in the Northern part of Middle Tennessee. We fenced it with pasture fencing and an entrance gate. My land is covered with ticks, which I know would be every chickens dream but I am unsure as to what predators I am up against. We are willing to get a LGD but again, are just not sure where to begin. I am entertaining tractor coops and free ranging...My ultimate goal is an Organic, sustainable farm so I need the chickens to do their job on the ticks!
HELP!!!

Congratulations!!!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might want to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors and what they suggest coop wise and what predators they are seeing https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/226276/tennessee and the Predator forum for help with dealing with the various predators. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/13/predators-and-pests
Take a look at the Coops section for a lot of Coop and Tractor ideas. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops
And don't forget to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on your new land! And what better than a flock of chickens on it! Kelsie has really given you all the links for lots reading and connecting with other members in your area.

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome!

How lucky! To have all that land! Now you can fill it up with chickens, and maybe ducks... and some geese and perhaps a pig and a cow... and a pony...

Well that is what I would do if I ever got my hands on a 5 acres of land!

You've come to the right page for information. Have fun surfing the forums!

I don't know how well chickens handle ticks but, guineas are supposed to be the real tick hunters. Many people get them just for that reason. They also are alert and loudly sound the alarm when predators approach.
