Fuzzy's Farm

So I'm reading "The small scale poultry flock". It's really good although I don't agree with all of it. He has a good section on run management for those of us who can't free range the girls and suggests that a run should be covered in deep litter - primarily hay or straw and that as this matures, worms and grubs, etc will develop underneath it and supply protein to the flock. The deep litter also helps turn droppings into useable compost instead on eventually building up enough that the chemical imbalance hurts the soil. Also deep litter helps seeds sprout (from the hay, etc. and also if you broadcast birdseed over it) which supplies greens.

What do you guys think? I'm seriously considering this as it would give the girls something to do as well as provide worms...
I use a modified version. Garden soil, shreaded paper, weeds, wheat,Oats, etc. on concrete with some cardboard in spots on top. Supports lots of earth worms. not stinkie. I remove it once a year and apply to garden. Has a roof so does not get wet unless I want to water it. Which I do from time to time.Well the edges get wet with heavy rain cause drip edge is at edge of concrete. Worms collect under sheets of newspaper and cardboard on surface. That's working for me.

That's a good reason!!! Your winters sound so bad I would hate dealing with stuff like water freezing all the time.
Can't do any ice fishing without ice. Guess I don't do much of that anymore anyway.

Welllllll ..... In my opinion I don't need a man. They are totally worthless and are good for only one thing and that isn't even half the time so to me they are just a waste of time LOL.
Thank you so much.
I've thought of that using Rye. Make a box about 6 by 3 of 2X4's and cover the top with 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Then throw in Rye see. It sprouts really quickly and would be a good green but I don't know if it's that good for chickens. You could use bird see and move the box around wherever you want.
I broadcast some of the rye seeds among my black berries and the chickens trim the plants back when I give access.
Have a question that maybe can be answered by some of you. My youngest DD has been sick since last week with the flu. Right now she's down to a cough, headache and sore throat. I can manage the cough and headache, but can't seem to get the sore throat better. I've tried throat drops, otc medicine and salt/water gargle. The gargle is the only thing that makes it feel a little better, but the others don't help at all. I looked in her mouth and don't think it's a strep issue so I don't want to call up the doctor because I know they think it's a waste of their time if it's not something major. So any helpful ideas on what I can do or try to make it better for her?
I have found that honey, lemon juice and burbon, sipped slowly for several hours make me pain free. Makes me feel better even if I don't have a sore throat.

One might not use the treatment too often though as it tends to produce headache.

Bob... I wasn't meaning you. You are a sweet wonderful guy. I am talking men in general. 99 out of 100 are worthless. Then there is the 1% like you that aren't. But there isn't enough like you to go around so some of us get stuck with the worthless ones.

Well, Hannah... All I can say is little brothers can really suck sometimes... They are normally better when they are adults. Mine was at least.

WELL! Imagine my surprise, getting home from work and seeing that I had plenty to read! Sure, you all wait for a crap @$$ snow day while I am working to do it, but still... I am in for a road trip. Never been to Okie before. Ditching kids and mom and john for a week sound mighty fine to me. HEHE

I can't wait to see what your little guy looks like Kim. Is is frizzled now? Looks a bit frizzy.

As for my chicks... LIke I said, the one managed to get out and is byebye. Hate that. The Fav chick is chirping away, hasn't made progress though, but sounds very strong, so not worried yet. I know it can take 24 hours from first pip to out... HURRY UP THOUGH!

Kim, I think you need to see your house... I think you need to move to the country. I think you need to leave rotten eggs all over all those backside hole neighbors houses on your way out of there. THAT WAY you can have all the chickens you want. I can dream for you too. That's my dream for you. The other one is not talkable... I don't need padded cells.

Tee... did you work today? About your girl... I think maybe your should start her on ACV as soon as the sore throat is clear. I have been drinking (GAK) the ACV since I learned of it helping my gall bladder attacks. I have not gotten sick even when the boy brings home colds from school! It is nasty, not kidding, but I like that I haven't been ill.

BYFM, I am curious... like a cat... ? What happened?

Lets see.. what else...
