Fuzzy's Farm

Thanks for advice! I'm taking everyone's input. I need it . My coop is 10 by 10 . And will set up off the ground. I'll post a pic as soon as it gets here and I get it together.
i almost forgot to say HI! Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions :) Always nice to have more chicken friends! Lots of pics too, we like pics! :)

Fuzzy... DHs family sucks...

Gigi... That would be great.

I have looked over their website and really I think they should take the whole thing apart and start over... Do you think I would get the job if I said that? They have 70+ citiy locatons in MI and they have a seperate page that says almost the same things in different ways on each page... It is wasteful and redundant.
However, they could have one page that tells all the great aspects of the company and why their service is so importaint... Then "Click here to find a location near you!" So much simpler.
As a "potential client" looking throught the site, I found it very repetitive and disorganized... also I am not sure un-handy people would know some of the terms used.
Regularly circulated newspapers write at a 4th-6th grade level... (I included that on my resume) If I get it great... If not oh well...

TD and TM talked with me today and explained that they would really like me to continue watching the kids. They both expressed that TM would be getting a promotion soon and would be giving me a significant amount of money more once the baby arrives. They also said they feel very secure having their children stay here and fear the "baby" that they have now would get lost in the shuffle at TD's Ex's house... Plus he said she is a big fan of the nap... all day long...So who would be watching the 7 kids at her house? Your guess is as good as mine...
But right now there is no more money to be had... so I still have to get another something to do to make more $$

aA 49 sq foot coop is not big enough for 13 birds. You are talking just over 3sq feet per bird. If you have to keep the birds locked up for longer periods of time you will have injuries. Birds peckign at each other, fighting for space. You want to have a minimum of 4 sq feet of floor space per bird, with a foot of roost space per bird. This floor space does not include the space for nest boxes or feed stations. Nest boxes and feed stations really will cut into that 49 sq feet. You want at minimum 10 sq feet per bird in the run. You'll just need to settle for fewer birds. Say 10 hens and 1 roo.

NOW, that being said... if you are going to have FREE RANGING birds, you can get away with the smaller coop for them all. If you are not, you really need to have a much more extensive run. 130sq foot minimum,  that'd be a 10x13 foot run... Personally, I'd double that length. Say a 13x20. Trust me, you'll be happier for it, since the birds will be happier for it. Yes bury the whole perimeter of the fence. By having it be long and skinny, you can roof it easier with PVC and tarps, to create shade, or even dry area. My run is 12x28. PVC is makes the roof frame, and a tarp. The sides are plastic covered for the winter. I will leave the tarped roof on for the summer as well, to keep a dry area that is always shaded. ALSO, able to make separate pens and coops with in that space if needed. I have 4 coops with in that space, all up off the ground so I can crawl under as needed.. I used to let my birds free range all day, and lately have had to lock them up more often, the hawks have been horrible on them... SO, I am happy that I have that much run for them. They've all got enough space. They aren't happy being locked up, but they aren't dead either.

So, all in all, if you are going to have a coop that small for 13 birds, then you really need to make the biggest possible run that is predator safe. I even have roosts in the run, and a lot of the birds prefer to sleep on those instead of in the coops. I only allow that though because I am pretty confident that nothing is going to get in... You need to be confident nothing can get it...

Wow thanks for info! See how much I know? I'll learn... Maybe just need to get 6 hens and 1 rooster then?
Are you wanting to hatch eggs? Or do you just want eggs to eat? You don't need a rooster unless you want to fertilize the eggs the hens lay so you can have more babies/chickens. If you just want eggs to eat then I would only get hens and no rooster. I've only hens (9) in a 30X40 run and a 7X7 coop (inside a 10X10 shed). It works great

I hate the first week of a new semester. All the students are afraid to talk - no one wants to look 'stupid' - lol. And there are tons of people trying to enroll in classes already filled so you have to do special permissions which are a pain. My classes are overflowing (I guess that's job security - ha) but I fill bad that these are graduate students who should be getting a lot of attention and they are in classes with 35-40 students. Oh well, I'll retire in 2-3 years when I pay off all my bills and won't worry about it.

BYFM just let me know if you get the job and I'll send you the references.

Fuzzy, space may be just what you need. Are you going to try to keep your girls at your mom's?

Yes, Nova, I'm so glad the stitches are out of my finger. But the surgery evidently cut some nerves so the tip of my finger is numb. It makes typing a real experience

Loosing sensation to the tip of your finger is gonna take some getting used to, that's for sure! Steep price for just trying to wax the dang table! I would have to burn the thing out of spite. :)
