Fuzzy's Farm

Ya know, with cost seriously on the rise for things, I am thinking of giving the mix a try too, Bob. You said you mix it with pine right? Where do you get shredded paper? I might need to invest in a shredder. I bet it burns real well too when its time for clean outs.

I was just rereading the info on her site and she says she uses pine shavings. However, they must be the small ones as mine don't look like that. Maybe I'm going to have to try the "animal bedding" size of pine shavings instead of the large flakes I'm using now?

It's shredded paper. I use it too. Apparently, much to the chagrin of several members. It's great in the coop. Mixes well with soil and crap in run too.
I use the fine pine shavings in my coop- LOVE it...or rather, I DID. I dont use anything now.

I used shredded paper in my nestboxes too. I didnt like it- however, it may have been better had I mixed the shredded paper with something else. My girls loved to poop in boxes and it became soggy really quick.

Hi Bob; That's a great idea. Where do you get yours? I may have to do some asking around school and see where they send all the paper for recycling... Why do people not like it?
Well, it's not in the coop, but we have some boxes of shredded newspaper in our pole barn and we check them every day because some of the girls will go in there and lay an egg in the boxes.
I bought the fine pine shavings from Atwoods (do you have that store up your way?) today for 4 dollars a "bale" which is a great buy. I was spending $8.00 at the feed store so how good would that be if you could mix the finer shavings with the paper. Plus I really like things that decompose easily.

I haven't figured out how to post my pictures yet, so I can email them to anyone that would like to see them! My email is [email protected]. Is this normal? Went to feed chickens this morning, and my big rooster pecked the back of my hand, I was pouring the feed into feeder with the other hand. Didn't hurt just startled me!
Sometimes they do that. I give mine a thump on their beak a time or two and they don't do it again. But I don't have roosters so I'm not sure if they would react differently. I think sometimes you have to show them what's acceptable but only in a way that doesn't hurt them or scare them. A thump on their beak tells them "I'm the queen so don't peck me again or I'll peck you" - LOL!

I agree. It'd be the last thing one of my roosters ever do. I have 5 boys and we all have a healthy respect for each other, but they know who's boss and I've never had an issue with aggressiveness from any of them.
