Thanks, Rusty. I hadn't thought of scooping the shavings with a litter scoop. That's a great idea. I'm cleaning both the coop and the brooder today so perfect timing.Gigi, I use the fine shavings and a kitty litter scoop. I also use the fine in the large coop. Made a big kitty scooper. Bought one of those pitchfork used to pick up road apples. Cover it with rabbit wire scoop and shake. Good to go! Alot of poo at once And save the shavings.
Thanks for the congrats, Nova. We actually have 2 grandbabies coming at the same time. Youngest son and his wife found out they are due about a month after the other one. Lots of babies coming. My youngest son is freaking out because it wasn't planned and he's worried about money. I told him to relax, they will work it out.Gigi, YEAH! goncrats on the future GD! That does sound/read a bit wrong don't it. I have not heard back from the Currator, but I figure he's busy and I will give him time to answer.
RaZ posted a webpage on the MI thread that had grazing frames. I am thinking instead of putting a new apron all around the coop and run, I am going to built a grazing frame all the way around the coop. They'll come away from the coop about 2 feet. This will give me something to keep anything from digging under, and it'll also keep a green zone around the coop. I will also then put a fence around this area with chicken wire or fish line running around that to keep the hawks from getting in this way...
Grazing frames... I also want to build a few of these in the areas of the yard that the ducks destroyed with their digging...

They used hard ware cloth, but with my budget and my champaigne tastes... LOL Chicken wire will do the task and its cheap enough to replace as needed.

?? Nothing from me i don't think. I've been soooo busy! Weather isn't helping, either.
Several inches of Sand! and if you want to get spiffy toss in little bits of fine gravel (I have a gravel road not far away, i take the fine stuff that sifts into the puddle on the end of the driveway.) Gives them a great start for their little gizzards
Any time i use a heat lamp, in fact, i use sand. Saved my bacon this year, too. My lamp finally had an uh-oh, and had i used shavings they would have all been fried!
Yes, it's my long week.
Poop. I want the orloffs real bad. Don't know if i can have them long term, though.
I really want to see the silkies, too, really want one of those as well, LOL. I want i want , i want............ Drat. Maybe someone could be a friend for my little hope?
I guess that his aunt (remember the one who kept insisting we were using tons of electric, claimed i was using an AIR CONDITIONER to sit in all day? yup, that one) anywho, his aunt has been apparently trying to get DH's dad to split the electric 50/50. So she's been trying to get $80 a month from him! Remember, all that's running is a fridge (which at these temps clearly isn't running) and a light with ONE nightlight sized bulb screwed in, and my water de-icer. Now if you remember, i have my water in a huge rubber dish, which is in another rubber dish so very insulated. Element at full force is 250 watts, but unless temps dip lower than mid 20's my water don't freeze since it's in the camper. They would NOT believe this. (I've been doing this for 2 years without electric, so i know this to be true.) So DH's dad finally flipped on them and unhooked the power. I see his point, unfortunately this means that i have to leave the house at 4:30 AM to check the bird's water to make it to work! I can't wait for the weather to break.
So far i think all of my pullets have waited for me to be there to lay their first eggs, kinda cool and scarey! She was crying harder than any of the others had, i thought it had gotten stuck for sure! I always sing for them and try to relax them.
Her little rooster was a trooper, was fighting the others to keep them away so she was safe.
