Nova I love the two ideas also! Especially the gazebo! Very good idea.. So I did what you said with the light and candle, and looks to me from my inexpert eyes that I have all winners! Of course I'm not real sure, but looks like veins to me. And Agnus didn't make a big fuss, just looked at me like Hurry up and let me go back to sleep! Lol thanks. And I'm not really into the bantams I love them but want eggs, so I have friend that is going to trade me some of her big chicks for some of my bantam chicks! Win win situation.

Gigi, I use the fine shavings and a kitty litter scoop. I also use the fine in the large coop. Made a big kitty scooper. Bought one of those pitchfork used to pick up road apples. Cover it with rabbit wire scoop and shake. Good to go! Alot of poo at once And save the shavings.
Thanks, Rusty. I hadn't thought of scooping the shavings with a litter scoop. That's a great idea. I'm cleaning both the coop and the brooder today so perfect timing.

Someone tell me WHY I got 16 more chickens?????

Gigi, YEAH! goncrats on the future GD! That does sound/read a bit wrong don't it. I have not heard back from the Currator, but I figure he's busy and I will give him time to answer.

RaZ posted a webpage on the MI thread that had grazing frames. I am thinking instead of putting a new apron all around the coop and run, I am going to built a grazing frame all the way around the coop. They'll come away from the coop about 2 feet. This will give me something to keep anything from digging under, and it'll also keep a green zone around the coop. I will also then put a fence around this area with chicken wire or fish line running around that to keep the hawks from getting in this way...

Grazing frames... I also want to build a few of these in the areas of the yard that the ducks destroyed with their digging...

They used hard ware cloth, but with my budget and my champaigne tastes... LOL Chicken wire will do the task and its cheap enough to replace as needed.
Thanks for the congrats, Nova. We actually have 2 grandbabies coming at the same time. Youngest son and his wife found out they are due about a month after the other one. Lots of babies coming. My youngest son is freaking out because it wasn't planned and he's worried about money. I told him to relax, they will work it out.

Great idea on the grazing frame. My girls will love it. Now just to get some 2X4's and wire... I should have bought stock in 2X4's...

no i am... just not right now... this was supposed to be a quick trip to help out with my mom then things went a bit haywire !!!! to say the least

Oh, good! I'm glad you are going to get to go home soon. Being away with kids at home can be really hard.

If the curator doesn't email you back boo on him. I'll find someone else.

Silver glad you are getting to come home soon! There's no place like home. Gigi glad you are going to be grandparent again! Aren't children wonderful? I have new great niece coming in November and im excited! Have great day everyone! Hope all works out with curator Nova!

Good Morning everyone. Well, lambing has finally ended. I have just one ewe to lamb yet. Thank God for another year.

Nova - I have lost my head lately. Think I needed an intervention here LOL. Somebody needs to take my debit card from me hahaha. I bought 2 dozen Partridge Cochen bantam eggs, 1 dozen Mottled Houdan eggs, 1 dozen Mottled d'Uccle eggs, and a dozen Silkie eggs (porcelain, lavender, isabella, and paint). AAAANNNDDDDDD............2 Emu eggs !!!! Soooo, if these hatch just let me know if you need any. I will share with you. Over the weekend I picked up a splash silkie roo for my splash hens, a lavender roo (who is just gorgeous) and the lady threw in a young blue roo, a young blue partridge roo, a blue pullet, and a black pullet. This lady also has beautiful paints and cuckoo silkies and told me she would make sure I get some of each when she starts hatching. I am thinking that I might just get rid of most of my other breeds ( not all and NOT my Fav's) and concentrate mostly on my silkies. I will keep my Wellies. I will keep my Polish and most of my bantams but I think the Marans, Blue Andalusions, and the Orloffs will be leaving. Oh, and I have a trio of Golden Campines if you are interested in them. Let me know if you want any of these. I have 2 just beautiful French Black Copper Marans roos and their ladies.

Gail, Tee, Fuzzy, and any of my friends on here, this also goes for you. Just let me know if you are interested in anything I have that I am going to part with.

Gives them a great start for their little gizzards :) Any time i use a heat lamp, in fact, i use sand. Saved my bacon this year, too. My lamp finally had an uh-oh, and had i used shavings they would have all been fried!

That's what i was thinking of doing! Kinda did a michigan hick thing like it with a couple of the long skinny flower boxes, and some wire over the top. Cat grass was in it for the cat, and the chickens attacked it! I tried to save it by putting the barrier, and it worked well for me. For the long skinny hardware cloth, i think it's only $15 for about 5 feet? You could build large raised beds out of repurposed wood or concrete. Don't know about the dirt, unless you steal dirt from another area of your yard.

Quote:Originally Posted by RBahmer Poop. I want the orloffs real bad. Don't know if i can have them long term, though. :( I really want to see the silkies, too, really want one of those as well, LOL. I want i want , i want............ Drat. Maybe someone could be a friend for my little hope?

Well, the saga of DH's family causing issues for me continues. :( I guess that his aunt (remember the one who kept insisting we were using tons of electric, claimed i was using an AIR CONDITIONER to sit in all day? yup, that one) anywho, his aunt has been apparently trying to get DH's dad to split the electric 50/50. So she's been trying to get $80 a month from him! Remember, all that's running is a fridge (which at these temps clearly isn't running) and a light with ONE nightlight sized bulb screwed in, and my water de-icer. Now if you remember, i have my water in a huge rubber dish, which is in another rubber dish so very insulated. Element at full force is 250 watts, but unless temps dip lower than mid 20's my water don't freeze since it's in the camper. They would NOT believe this. (I've been doing this for 2 years without electric, so i know this to be true.) So DH's dad finally flipped on them and unhooked the power. I see his point, unfortunately this means that i have to leave the house at 4:30 AM to check the bird's water to make it to work! I can't wait for the weather to break.

And whatever the temps were last night, the water was NOT frozen this morning at 5:30! I wish i could have dragged her out of bed by her scruff and showed her that the dang thing wasn't hardly on; i payed his dad $30 a month anyway. She just wanted more! Grr. AND, the whole family has been told that i've been running a heater for my birds, what a crock! So angry.

Buuut, there was a ray of sunshine in my coop yesterday: my little porcelain d'uccle girl finally laid her first egg! Pale pinkish-buff. The booted girl lays a light brown, so will be able to keep from hatching brother/ sister eggs! :) So far i think all of my pullets have waited for me to be there to lay their first eggs, kinda cool and scarey! She was crying harder than any of the others had, i thought it had gotten stuck for sure! I always sing for them and try to relax them. :) Her little rooster was a trooper, was fighting the others to keep them away so she was safe. :)
