Fuzzy's Farm

Boy do I have a few stories to tell today. Sorry if you've read it already... but.. hey... Some of ya surely haven't.

Blue Berry, a blue marans hen laid her first egg since coming to live here before the flood... I found it in the phoenix coop. I just about giggle my self to wet pants after finding it...

This is Blue Berry's egg next to a regular sized egg...

BUT! Wait! It gets better... I wanted to see if there was anything in this tiny little prank of an egg...

Yup. Complete with a yolk... AND there was a little meat spot on the yolk. LOL.

I found this before the neighbors kid ticked me off big time.

I was sitting at my kitchen table, looking out at my birds, and I see them all run for the neighbors house. The neighbors throw crack out for them and their birds. Then I see Andrew, the 20-21 yr old kid, kick my rooster Strutter. Not because Strutter had spurred him, but because Strutter was trying to mount one of their POL birds. Now... Strutter has been courting these POL birds for a few, and they all come over to him the minute the neighbors let them out of their little coop and run. SO... Strutter was just doing what roosters do, and the pullet was just doing what pullets do. Objecting. But not only did Andrew kick him off the pullet, he proceeded to chase him out of the yard and kicked him again in his backside. I yelled out the door, Carl said, "He was pestering the girls." I said, "Fine, chase him off but don't kick him, I don't' want him getting mean." He said, "He didn't kick him," Bull pucky. I saw him. With my own eyes.

What ticks me off is this... Since that brat jerk came home from college for the summer he's been a real glass mole. He used to be very into the chickens. Since he was forced to come home for the summer and get a job to help pay for his next years expenses or live on the street in Cali, he's been aggressive, does his chores angrily and just is an all out donkey. Even his parents have gotten on him about how he has handled some of the birds when they were moving them from one coop to another.

What ticks me off more, is that Strutter is a very laid back, gentle roo. He's the type we all WANT. There is no room for a mean roo. Think being kicked a few time won't have an effect? Maybe not this time, but hey... I have kids who feed this roo out of their hands. He's not aggressive to people. RBahmer wouldn't have given me an aggressive bird. She knows I have little kids. Anyway, can you imagine if he got mad and spurred that butt hat over this? I'd have to consider culling him just because he's defending himself. I'd be so mad. He's the loveliest bird. He's a good 12-15 pounds. Has the biggest head!

I'd like to kick that kid in the pants. Maybe this is the reason their roosters always end up being aggressive.... Kick em a few times for doing what roosters do...

:( Idk nova. Does seem like they are triggered, sometimes out of fear. Henry WAS a sweet boy right up until around the time my little hen's nest was moved, whoever did it spooked him and he was a real p.i.t.a. and i considered culling him. I whopped him a couple times after particularly mean attacks, but for the most part have tried to be gentle and patient with him. He's never been a lap bird, but does enjoy occasional petting, so when he's up on the roost i pet him and he bends down for it......... and hasn't spurred in almost a month i think. Hormones? Spring? Jerk scaring him by peeking in when i'm not there? Who knows but whatever you do don't let it go on, he WILL ruin your bird like my old neighbors did to my plucky rooster. I still miss him.

I got a surprise yesterday, a good/bad one! Good, i found that little sharma mommy is a real mommy now! Bad? i thought she was only a week and a half in, so that means that my job has literally wore me to the point of losing time! The big eggs from hope unfortunately didn't even start, but the two pure d'uccle eggs DID, one is healthy and one isn't walking. She's kinda pushing around on her butt? I have to try to supplement her, and hope hope hope. :/

I got two faverolles chicks at CS... one has grown.. the other didn't at all. She was eating and drinking, but she just didn't ever grow. Even the silkie chick and cochin chick out grew her. The other faverolles chick is now bigger than the 3... 4 week old jap bantams! Yeah... I hate when that sort of thing happens. Just never really know with chicks.

Going to invest in a new fence...Even if it is a step in fence until the neighbors kid goes back to Cali...

i got the manna pro chick electrolytes, the one in the yellow jar with the pills you drop in. Has maganese riboflaven, b12 and whatnot.

Is this the one you recommended last year over the usual save a chick? That one didn't have the vitamins, i'm hoping it's vitamin related and not a birth defect. Her outer toes aren't spread out, they are under her middle toe, but they can go out like normal with no apparent pain when i experimented gently.

Small tiny egg Nova! Well I've took all the eggs my two marans had under them it's been 4 weeks no chicks both of them had 20 eggs they had hoarded up. They were needless to say very ripe! Was so afraid they would explode on me. Made my hubby help me with last one didn't tell him how they explode until after I had thrown them into woods and he heard them go off like fireworks! Lol.. He said you had me helping you and they do that! Was too funny. But got nests all cleaned out and new bedding in. And two very unhappy hens. No more broodys for me! Hope everyone has a safe fourth!

baby is doing better! :D I have dipped her on and off through the night, and taped her toes, hobbled her to prevent splay; this morning i took it all off and she's not as good as the other, but doing fairly good!

Not sure which part worked, but glad it did.

This one was having issues getting out of the shell, i had helped her hatch. Not sure what went on, but the cold weather couldn't have helped. It probably had to do with me putting those big eggs under my little hen too, i won't be mixing sizes again. I don't think she's big enough to get those big ones up to temp anyway.

Glad the baby is doing better, Fuzzy. That was pretty smart doctoring. I'm going to grab some Manna Pro electrolytes. I like everything Manna Pro puts out. Wish they had chicken feed.

Cleaned the coop super clean today. I love love love my poop boards. They are just a box made of rectangle 2X4's filled with sand and I use a cat litter scooper to sift about every other day or so. Sooo easy and my bedding stays very clean. Best idea ever.

Now tomorrow will clean the goat barn. There are cobwebs everywhere. So big they could catch a goat - ha. We are having really cool weather here - mid 80's. Wish it would last. Last summer we were in the 114's....
Have a great 4th of July everyone!!!
