Fuzzy's Farm

Gonna post a pic of the winter enclosure... if I can find it...

Ok... this was just before last winter hit and literally just finished the plastic sheeting. SO, the constantly open coop never got any actual wind that would blow into the coop or against the doors. Everything opened into the winter run, both the duck coop and the chicken coop. The duck coop was also completely open faced with hardware cloth, but on really cold cold days, I put a wood panel over that to help them stay warmer keeping their body heat in. I did not build the duck coop... The run roof is corragated, so plenty of ventilation where that meets the wooden frame. I did not use the foam that you would put under it... Still don't know that it has been put on an angle.. Was NOT fun getting snow off a flat surface... Especially since I built the run with line of sight leveling... HEHE. SO, it slants slightly towards the coop. Yup. LOL.

It looks nothing like this now...

Fuzzy, I made your recipe for apple pie. It was so good! DH told me not to make it again because he just kept eating. Said his waist can't take it - LOL.

4 - 2'X3' windows on the north and south sides of the coop and then covered them with hardware cloth so we had air flow. ... I'm thinking of covering the big holes with shutters or clear plastic and then cutting smaller holes in the very top of the coop on each end the size of floor vents and putting vent covers on them that can open and shut. Do you think two vents (probably 12X4 inches) would be enough ventilation for the winter? Or I could do 4 total...
I'm not an expert here, either. I only keep a handful of birds, 6-8 big ones in my camper coop. I am also huge on poop cleaning, i had poop trays last year and this year i want to throw down a heavy layer of the finer shavings so i can scoop it clean. Last year i also used a showbird supplement, which has something in it that reduces the odor of their poo. The only vent i had last year was one 4"x6" one on the wall that has an angled grate over it, so air can get in but not blow through, but with so few birds the ammonia wasn't an issue. Also, the turds froze pretty quick!

I would definitely put in plexi, or salvaged windows if you can find some. It will let in light and if you've ever camped out during the cold months you will know what a Godsend standing in a beam of sun is when you've been cold all night! It is not only warmth, but it is soothing and will help you get some eggs without a light. My birds sunbathed all winter in the windows :)

Which pie? The rustic one or the pioneer woman's one? Glad your hubby liked it :)

I got my plexi from lowes. Then, as you can see, I am not a good cutter, LOL, cut a chunk out of the one wall, and screwed it on. LOL. Whats really sad, is I did it with a rotozip, so, never going to get a straight line with one of them... I hope this rain lets up. I hate the idea of driving anywhere with out the door on. LOL. We have to take the door off at one place, drive to the other place, behind the building so we can get to the bay door, weld the hinge back into place, then drive back to the other place and put the door back on. LOL, I am glad I have a huge stadium umbrella though.

Well, this was a short visit. DH just called and said he got a deer last night. I gotta run and get him and his deer in to a processor!

I cut them up sometimes for him, ..............Last year this time we did one and those buggers are bloodthirsty! They get aggressive, and i don't want to get stung up! Gotta wait for good frost and snow, then i can do it.

About my egg count... I think this is also why I haven't really had a drop in eggs yet. They sleep in the summer coop still, even though they can go into the coop coop... lol... so they get ALL the light their is to get everyday. SO, they are still getting 12 hours... Soon, though... Will be less. And... Less...

YAY! I'll trade you a smile for a peice big enough for my dinner... No one here will eat deer. I don't get it. It is so very yummy. Neighbor is going out this weekend it think. Him and his dad just finished making these really nice deer stands... He didn't get any last year... I am not holding out hope. Scotty, this dude from work, he got one last year, but he said it was an old buck... meat wasn't as nice as a youngun...

I hope this time it's right and it stays on!

If not i'll talk to my dad, he is an excellent welder and though i don't talk to him much i think he would do it. Would have to bring the welder, i don't know if he has one at home or not but i do know he can weld anything from an eye beam to a little thing, and they are not only strong but nice welds. Dad's a perfectionist too, i get it naturally! He lives over by Michigan's Adventure, so it would be a hike though.

he he he. Maybie i'll rent out my DH

If you smile winningly enough, you could convince him to cook you a steak, and he is an awsome cook of venison! I'm not, but he is and he makes those things melt in your mouth, with lots of carmelized onions and ...........sigh. But i don't know, he may get this one turned into burger and wait until the next to get cuts done. He usually gets 2-3 a year, that's mostly what we eat for meat. No pink slime here! (Asian beef with additives)

LOL, the welding machine belongs to the bowling alley where Joe works. Joe is a guy who also delivers papers and a good bud. SO... not thinking I could snatch it. LOL.
