This dog. I swear. We adopted him when he was 4 years old from a rescue foundation. Honest to God...

Since moving him to our new apartment, there have been NO messes. This week though, I'm at my wits end. He pooped by the door. Now, it's not just one or two terds, we're talking an easter basket worth of it. And when I say Easter...I mean, he hides these things like Easter Eggs. Not just one "dump" site, but several little turds all over the living room.

So I clean that up. It's evident he did it sometime in the night (although I'm not sure how as he was locked in my bedroom with me.

Two days ago, I notice a yellow mark (VERY yellow on a nasty dark brown carpet). Knowing it is FAR too late to reprimand him for it, I resign myself to cleaning it up. Probably my fault for some reason or another. Today. This is the kicker. I have taken him out 2 times already. He only has access to food in the morning and evening for 10 minutes at a time then it gets picked up. Water is available all day.

Somehow. OMG. Somehow, this 12 year old monster jumped the baby gate into the ferret/chicken room and peed on DBF's luggage. I'm talking he hiked up his leg and did it. He then must have jumped back out of this gate to act all innocent. I didn't find it until just now as I was vacuuming the room. I am SO ticked off. Of COURSE the pee is cold...just ticks me off that this mutt thinks he can do whatever he wants...because he is sneaky and conniving.

At this point...he's back in diapers again. I have tried potty training this worthless dog for YEARS. He just won't commit to it. When I think he's finally got the hang of it, this crap starts up again. The Shih Tzu is potty trained with NO issues. Why the heck is he such a monster?

He would be crated at my house

What a hassle! Is he really mad about something and "punishing" you -- or has he never housebroke properly?

ETA: never mind

I would crate him, and if he was ever out "in the house" he would be tethered to me (no more sneaking!).

We'll go for months at a time where there are no issues and I'll think he's finally got it. Then we have weeks like this where he just decides to forget he's potty trained. When I'm gone somewhere he is crated, but when I'm here, he's out. I think that's what ticks me off more. I was HERE and he could have told me at any time that he needed to go out...instead he jumped the barrier and did it...

That is the stance I have taken on this. Everyone in the family wanted to put him down when my mom passed, but I had promised her I'd take care of him until it was his time. You watch. He'll wind up living to be 22 years old...just to spite me!!!!

Yes, he was neutered when we adopted him from ARF. I can tell you, this is the absolute LAST poodle I will ever adopt from a rescue group. He has completely ruined me on the poodles forever. Over the years, we've had 5 poodles, all sweet, loving things. This one won't come to you unless he wants something.

I have NEVER had this problem with a dog...ever. And I KNOW it's not because he's dumb. He knows too many commands to be considered dumb and you can look in his eyes and see his intelligence. Apparently, with his ridiculous sense to not be potty-trained, he just doesn't have much of a survival instinct...

Edit: I don't want anyone thinking he isn't cared for, I even pet him every now and then when he's not acting all "high and mighty" and refuses to come near me.

Gah... I know. The last one we had lived to be 16.

Look, he doesn't look remotely old in this photo (taken 5 minutes ago):
