Gaited Breeds Anyone??? Talk about what you have... Questions????

We don't have an actual gaited horse, but he does do a running walk. He was bought at an auction in Texas after 8 years of being a ranch horse down in Mexico. We've heard it is common for cowboys to try and breed for the running walk because it is easier to sit when you are riding 8+ hours a day. I do have to say, it is an awesome gait to have out on the trails!

Here's our guy. His name is Stetson.

Hi Chickerdoodle13, If he run-walks then he is gaited:D. Sounds like you haves great one. Lucky you: Best of both worlds:thumbsup.
A lot of the old working ranch stock has or had gait, the horses could cover more ground without wearing out. Most of the old mustang lines had gait, the Indians could cover more ground that way. When modern ranchers went west they turned out TB, Morgan, and Saddlebred stallions to improve the mustang size. So offspring could be used for ranch and army remounts in west. There are still a few of the Quarter horse lines that will throw a gaited foal, but few will talk about it.

Interesting! I did not know most of that. A lot of people give us strange looks when we ride on the trails but I love it! I originally wanted a TWH for the gait but my dad wanted a quarter horse. I think we ended up picking a pretty good one for both of us! LOL
