Galvanized or plastic waterers

Hello Halo
We went to plastic because they are easier to keep clean. We are using all 1 gallon size because they are easier to carry and we hang all of ours off the ground. We also went to 3 pound plastic feeders. We bleach them every other month and they have held up really well. We get the 3 pound feeders from Seminole Feed in Ocala and the 1 gallon Waterers from Tractor Supply in Dunnellon. Seminole also has the Galvanized Feeders and Waterers but they are expensive.

I got the galvanized feeders and waterers from Seminole; its those that are rusting. I think Ill try the plastic waterers and feeders when I need one next. I think what I did wrong with the plastic waterer that I got was I got a really big one, and its just to much for me to lug around. Next time smaller ones.

I use galvanized. I have some newer ones but I also have some VERY old ones that I bought from a farm sale. They are great, even if it freezes they don't crack or split like the plastic ones can and will.

I have a few plastic ones on hand just incase I need to add ACV to the water.

My 5 gallon plastic waterer is a bit of a strain to carry across the yard, and I've often thought of using the wheelbarrow. Those wheeled carts made for muck buckets would probably work well, too, possibly with minor modification. Just tossing that out since with horses around you may have one or the other handy

Good luck,

Pat, who should really repair the water (frostfree hydrant) in the chicken building, but realistically, probably won't

Pat, I could use the wheelbarrow (of course I have one

) but then I still have to lug it into the coop and up a step or two. I think Id rather just get some smaller ones. In fact I was just at TSC to get some Calf Manna (they have it in 10# bags! whoohooo) and I was looking at their waterers. They have galvanized that arent made by Little Giant, and they also have some plastic ones that look pretty nifty. I might try one or two.

I also had one of my new 5 gallon galvanized waterers from TSC rust this summer, but only after I put some vitamins & electrolytes in the water when the girls were a little under the weather. The other galvanized waterer I didn't put them in is fine. I replaced the rusted one with a 3 gallon plastic heated poultry fountain from Murray McMurray. I haven't plugged it in yet but will need to soon. You are supposed to be able to fill it thru the bottom filling hole but I usually take the bottom off & set the top up on end (the top has legs to keep it from falling over) then easily replace the bottom & turn it upright. I have actually found this waterer less cumbersome to deal with than the galvanized one.

Me too.
I use galvanized feeders and waterers. I have never had any rust on any of them. I also have some plastic on hand.
