We are going to try and breed them next year and then we were thinking about trying the eggs and the quail themselves. We've never tasted quail and I'm always interested in trying something once at least.

UPDATE: I'm sadly reporting the loss of both pipped eggs one from 48 hrs ago and one from 24 hrs. We did do an eggtopsy though and my son and my mother dissected one. It turns out their mostly heart. Poor things. The only odd thing i found was that the yolk wasn't all the way absorbed on both. Almost like they died right after they pipped. Oh well still got 11 to see what comes out. RIP little chicks.

From what I hear and read wood shaving is bad for baby quail... Because they will ingest it. I have a brooder set up with paper towels and no slip stuff for drawers..

Do you like white meat because gambels quail have it.

I am so a white meat girl. I hate dark meat unless it's on a fried chicken wing lol. But we've heard that quail is really good so we decided out of what hatches if we have an odd number of boy's vs girls we'll butcher one or 2 of the extras and leave the others for raising more if we really like the meat. If not then we'll raise them for fun and maybe raise some for release. They're native to our side of Nevada and we love watching the wild quail go after the seed block we have put down.

The pine shavings that we have are way to big for them to ingest at the moment. But as they get older that might just be a problem. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I want my birds to be as happy and healthy as they can be.
