GAMES FOR EGGS and other fun prizes

I can guarantee refusal at all my local PO if they show up in a priority box that has been cut for air holes. The post offices I have dealt with consider this destruction of their personal property.

I had someone ship me chicks that way once. The local PO raised a fuss and I had to pay extra plus they were not going to let me have the chicks.

Okay that's good to know! Thanks for the insight!

Did they say what you had to pay extra for? Was it for the difference between the flat rate price and the weight priority mail price?

yes, they were in a flat rate and they made me pay the difference between that and a weight priced box. It wasn't much but they were not very willing to let the box go. They wanted to go after the sender for destruction of property.

They needed the box unopened I guess for proof and I wouldn't let them keep my chicks for countless days while they tried to make their case. They were already a day late.

Hatcheries only ship day olds too, and figure in a lot of shipping costs into the chicks... plus their minimums are usually 15-25 so it's more cost effective as well... :/
A box of ducklings got lost in shipping... she called all over and raised h*ll with USPS to locate them... they were located, permission given to open the box to feed and water them and they were put on a special flight to the recipient... think they were in transit for 5 days but every single one made it...

That's absolutely insane! I've never had birds shipped to me before and I'm very afraid too. My pay office gets seriously confused over eggs to be held for pickup. I have no clue what would happen if they had chicks to deal with :/

This topic has got me curious. With the shipping boxes for chicks. .it's my understanding that you may use a priority flat rate box to ship chicks in as long as they have adequate spacing and vent holes and marked as live chicks. I couldn't find anything on Usps website saying hey had to be in the certain box. Just an adequate box. Not trying to ruffle any feathers at all. I'm just wondering if anyone has any further insight on this? I'd like to know in case I ever want to send chicks to someone.

That is a good question. If properly ventilated, and everything, why not?

So cutting holes in a USPS box is destruction of property? They destroy the boxes themselves!!! Not like many of the boxes get reused anyway, so what's the big deal about adding ventilation if they're still getting postage fees?

I'm going to ask them next time I'm at the P.O. if day old chicks can be shipped in Priority boxes with ventilation holes. I always used chick boxes because they are made for shipping, and even when stacked there are spaces between the boxes for ventilation. I have some Flock-Lock boxes now. I'm not sure I like them as well. They like regular brown boxes, can be stacked thereby reducing ventilation, and you're not supposed to add the excelsior matt or shavings. Seems like a corrugated cardboard matt would be slick for them to stand on? I've used them twice. Nobody complained. I just don't know how well they perform.

This year I had over 100 chicks shipped to me all make it alive they came from to different hatcherys

They're picky about their 'free' boxes... actually, each one is marked in small print on the box itself... property of USPS and any use other than their intended use is a violation...

I've had a few adults mailed to me and never had an issue... majority don't, but there's always a % that do...
