Gander with swollen foot

Miss Lydia. Ichthammol is great for drawing things out. Great idea. Did the bright light idea for visualizing help? If you need to get in there to try to get it out, use hypodermic needles. Wish I was there to help you, my friend. The kids are squirmy little boogers. Maybe the Ichthammol will help draw the splinter closer to the surface so you can use the needle and tweezers to get it out. I had never heard of the baking soda before, but it would be way cool if it does the trick. SMILE!

Well thank you for spelling it right RG it was out in their house so couldn't remember how to spell it. lol Listen today when I finally coaxed Sam close enough where I could pick him up, [poor thing is so traumatized by me holding him and soaking his foot.

but good news what ever I saw yesterday was not there today and the swelling has gone down not all the way but enough to where I feel it's getting better now. Tonight since it was almost dark when I finally was able to convince him to go inside

I had to pick him up and spray Veterycin on his foot. What a baby he is. Anyway I will keep soaking till it is completely normal and use the Veterycin and Ichthammol on it too. Thanks so much for encouraging words everyone and for advice RG.

How are your goosers doing, by the way, AD?

They're doing awesome! Gerdie is laying every 36 hours, and my 9 year old son is really excited because I situated the shed so he can see in the window from his room. We get to watch her build her nest while Herdie paces outside the shed like the expectant father at the hospital! They seem very comfortable, and Gerdie has taken to talking to me with the same soft grunt she uses with Herdie, which makes me smile. :)

I'm glad Sammie seems to be on the mend! (But darn, now we won't know if the baking soda trick works! LOL)

Yeah, but if I ever need to, I will use it even if its on a human and let you know.LOL!

Me too AD I have a splinter under my nail so I'll try this baking soda method today. since it's under the nail though not sure if it will work. My son is building me a goose house and he has all the walls done now just have to put it together and of course windows, doors and paint. I'll post pics when done, but that's how I managed to get a splinter under my nail. ouch. and RG I didn't try the flash light because I was able to see something without it but I will know what to do now if I need to.

I have been following this thread with great interest. I have tried the baking soda and had success. I made a paste and covered it with a bandaid and in the morning the splinter was at the surface. Used it on the kids instead of "digging it out." Also, the baking soda paste is great for wasp or bee stings to draw the stinger out and ease the burn.

I am considering a pair of geese. I know I must be crazy!! Later in the summer, after my chicks and ducklings are settled in their coops and my husband has time to recover from building. Looking at getting a couple from a rescue. They will be housed separately from the ducks and chickens. (My ducks and chickens are housed separately now.) We are building a tractor for our chickens to move them around the yard on nice days, and the ducks will probably be let out of their very large enclosure under supervision only. We have lots of predators here, neighbours farm dogs, coyotes, foxes, hawks. Do you think I could let the geese out to free range with the ducks if they weren't raised together? They would all have their own coops and runs for night and days we were at work.
Thanks

It really will depend on the attitude of the individual birds, but it isn't unheard of. Watch the geese especially during breeding season, as they get grumpy. And good to know the baking soda trick works!

If the baking soda doesn't work I would try Hydrogen Peroxide at full strength. Sometimes the bubbles force a splinter to the surface. I must be mad. My first coop isn't finished yet.LOL. My husband, who I caught yesterday leaning over the brooder and talking in a very soft childlike voice to the chicks and ducklings, is cringing at the thoughts of building two more. It has been nice and sunny but windy here the last couple of days. I put the ducks in the pen to pick dandelions, which they love and wade in the small pool but didn't put them in the big tub to swim as I thought it a bit cool and windy. He suggested we drag the tub in the garage and use warm water. LOL and he was not convinced we needed them at the beginning....lol lol

I did the baking soda last night just before bed so I wouldn't have to have my hands in water anymore

and although it is swelled up this morning and a bit painful I do think the splinter is closer to the surface so maybe doing the peroxide today and baking soda again tonight by tomorrow I can get this thing out.
As for Sam he now thinks I have the plague and won't come near me, lol I hate to put him through this torture [or so it seems to him] all I get is wet. but I have to keep soaking till all swelling is gone. course I amy have to apply hand lotion to his feet when through you ought to see my hands how dry they are just putting them inside the bucket of Epsom salt water.
Listen Younger My dh has built me so many luil coops for mine it's not even funny well not to him anyway. 3 years ago our son blessed us with lots of left over construction material so he built me a nice duck house to add on to the chicken coop which was a storage shed till the chickens came, then I took over the building he had built to store his motorcycle in so he had to build another one for his bike, He said NO MORE building, and so now our son is building me a goose house for my 2 geese, Honestly it never ends.

And that is so sweet about your dh talking to the chicks and ducklings, they don't like to show their soft sides often but once in a while it slips through.

you ought to see my dh with our drake we raised from a hatchling. they are best buds.
