So I got some safeguard paste and according to instructions I found on byc am feeding 3 cc with 2 lb of food, but I want to dose the whole flock (8) I doubt that will be enough, so how much should I make and for how long.

And, if I am still seeing the gaping should I try the invermectin paste? Injectable?

How long do I treat, or is it one dose and then retreat in 7 days?

Did you "test" for Gapeworms? Did you put a Q-tip down the throat of the chicken and come up with Gapeworm?

Ivermectin does nothing for chickens at all.... "pea size" dose of Safe-guard for standard, small pea size dose for Bantams.. for other worms. (Safeguard is for horses, the dosages for chickens are much smaller?)

Gapeworm is rare, must test to be sure they have it -- then.. the person on BYC to contact for info on this -- Contact or look for postings, replies from dawg53... best info on worming.

He has helped me with the worming issues... USE THE SEARCH here in Diseases and search for Worming... look for dawg53 as the reply... the more recent the better. (Check dates of reply)

A "pea" sized amount given orally to each chicken will kill gapeworm, but you'll need to dose them once a day for 3 or 4 days to get rid of them. Gapes and tapes are tough to get rid of.

Thank you dawg53, I've hears around your advice on worming us the best. I performed the gape test and if my husband got the swan in far enough (he was being chicken about it Haha) it was negative. I did give them each a dot of safeguard on bread anyway, I haven't wormed them ever and our area is known for worms of all kinds being terrible. Our vet recommends we worm our dogs even though they are in preventative medicine for intestinal parasites. I am still in observe mode to figure out if something is going on to cause the "gape" that I saw excessively from one today. Thank you all for your help.

Swagger, is there one wormer you prefer above the rest, what about medications for any infections? I'd like opinions so u am informed when I need to choose something over another for this or that illness or issue. Better yet, what is in your chicken medicine cabinet?

As far as wormers go, valbazen is the best wormer on the market. It kills all types of worms that chickens can get. For infections; Iodine, betadine, neosporin, blu-kote, hydrogen peroxide. I have used neosporin more than anything else. I had a JG roo last fall get an overload of E Coli bacteria. Before I found out what it was, I bought alot of meds to treat him. Those meds are still in my closet; aureomycin, corid, metronidazole, tylan 50 injectable in the fridge. I also have various wormers; Safeguard paste and safeguard liquid goat wormer, valbazen, zimectrin gold, wazine.

Thanks a bunch for that info. I try to diagnose before treating, who wants to medicate when its not needed, but I do like knowing what's best out there for what things.

I agree with you. The situation with my JG roo was an emergency and a stool sample had to be sent off for analysis...I wasnt going to let him die while waiting for the results. The total waiting time was 12 days...too long, too late.

Did you lose him? This is my first batch of chickens, but I have had my ducks for a few years, so I'm not going to panic at the first little thing. I do like to be prepared and like I said word on the screen is you are the one to go to with medication questions so thanks so much for taking the time to help out.
