Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

I had 15 tomatoe plants
I had same issues. Along with my turkeys helping themselves just before they ripened... Got about a gallon for me

Mother Nature did me in with a late frost and then a later garden killing hail storm. Even the bees didn't cooperate and did not provide me with any honey.

i got lucky with my tomatoes, not only with what i put out but what came up volunteer, i had at least 10 tomato plants come up from last year, tomatoes everywhere, these were the peach tomatoes, never had them do that before but enjoyed them totally, even the pigs enjoyed them, since they were peach tomatoes not good for canning unless i add lemon juice, still have a few that i brought in before the first frost

I guess you need to squirrel proof those tomatoes! Dad had the same problem with his.

I have used this Tomcat product, with reasonable success.

Kept most of the squirrels out of the flower pots digging/burying. Kind of difficult to keep them from jumping onto a plant and snacking away.

My second problem is of course brought about by self. Feeding those Lil Devlz.,,,,,, kind of over-run by them But I'm softhearted and forgive them.

They would be there even if you didn't feed them on purpose!

Looking at the ingredients I wonder if planting mint and garlic around the tomatoes would help. And of course put a little shampoo as well - Sodium Lauryl Sulfate??

Careful with the mint, it is downright invasive if not in a pot.

I will try doing that next spring. I can handle the mint,,, since it is in containers that I grow the items that get most squirrel activity.
Lii Devlz are just trying to save any extra food for a rainy day.
I will research the shampoo idea, and make sure it does not kill or stunt plant growth. Also read that moth balls, are a good deterrent, but the new moth ball formula has been changed. People on the bus wearing their coats for first time in the cool season,,,,,,, no longer smell like mothballs.
I remember mothballs would keep stray dogs off the lawn.
I purchased a can of this Critter Ridder.

It worked, until it rained. Went thru the can,,, and then found the Tomcat,,, which does not loose effectiveness due to rain/watering.

I'm pretty sure mint can get out of the pot and take root, unless maybe a hanging pot.

This is my crab-apple tree. Last year there was hardly any fruit due to a Spring frost, that wiped out the blooms. This year is really nice.
DS gathered a bunch of these fruits and is making some wine out of them.

My crabapple was so loaded this year that it still had lots of crabapples on it after a hail storm knocked off 70% of the fruit.

Last spring I had horrible germination of my pepper seeds. Because I had them out in the greenhouse with other stuff after I gave up on them, they were still being watered. Surprisingly after several months some of the seeds started germinating with some germinating as much as 3 months late.

It was too late to put them in the garden so I potted a couple of them and they are currently in my living room in front of my big semi bay window.
