Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

Since I have a bag of garlic that is sprouting really badly, I did a little searching on the web about planting garlic this early in the summer. According to an article I read, I can plant it now and use it as "green garlic" as it grows. Very similar to green onions.
I am going to plant this garlic into planter boxes in my greenhouse. I am going to try making them self watering.

garlic is very forgiving. you should do OK.
Maybe in the fall you can plant some of
the cloves for next summer's harvest ?

I took yesterday off. Went to the first neighborhood "kids" reunion. I haven't seen some of those "kids" since Jr High. the youngest one there was a wife of one of the guys , 71 yrs. the oldest was about 90. Lots of tattle tale stories. we all had fun.Too much to eat
I have to remove the battery mount and the muffler to get at the valve cover. I might modify that so I won't have to do it again in the future.

I am already starting to make a garlic bed for fall planting. Some of the cloves are still in good shape, so I will save them for as long as I can.
The garlic was given to my husband by a co-worker. This guy has many different kinds of garlic and grows enough to sell to restaurants. His wife has her favorites and uses different varieties for different recipes.
I am going to try to keep track of the varieties as I plant them, so I can figure out what I like and what I don't. There is one variety that he gave me that is on my list of don't like - it is very sharp in taste. Maybe it mellows when cooked? I will have to find out.

I found a recipe for pressure canning garlic -

The garlic is cooked and carnalized before canning and it is delicious. I made a 1/2 recipe of it the other day and tried it out. I had bought a bag of garlic form Sams the day before DH gifted me with the bag from the co-worker so I needed to find a way to use up alot of garlic fast.

I checked the valve clearances. they are both way wide. I am thinking there is obstruction . I decided to pull the head and clean the valves and seats.
So much for not getting too involved
There is a process I call "poor mans valve job" It involves some sand paper, some rubbing compound,, and a power drill with a rubber pad to turn the valve. If you decide to try,, I can give you step by step, on how.
The final process is referred to as lapping the valves. I used to rebuild car engines, so did it .

Thanks Rich, I will pull the head off today. Check the valves for dirt corrosion etc. I rebuilt a few flat head small engines. I know about the "emergency" lapping.. I even have a lapping tool here, somewhere.
The retainers are the key type so I won't need a valve depressor.
each valve clearance was . 006" over.
I suspect some buildup on the faces.

Bruce, when I get this beast back together, then we will talk about skills .lolol
It is a Husqvarna lawn mower.
to get the last head bolt off, I had to remove one of the exhaust manifold bolts. I sure hope I remember how to put it all together again.
right now it looks like it was hit by a howitzer shell.

E-0 gasoline will not l necessarily LAST longer than E-10. The thing about gasoline is that, #1- ethanol attracts water from the air which gets suspended in the petro based gas, causing rough running, #2- an engine with pre-E-10 gas plumbing is susceptible to the rubber deteriorating from ethanol contact, which can cause plugging in the carb. I recently had to dispose of 35+ gallons from a boat that sat for 5+ years, due to water contamination. It is an E-10 compatible motor. Gasoline will go bad if let go stale for a length of time. Tanks are vented and the atmosphere will take a toll on it. There are products that will extend the life of gas in a stagnant situation but occasionally running an engine will help out.
