Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

Can I suggest you try your hand at Stuffed cabbage rolls:drool:drool:drool:drool.. I'm getting hungry just looking at that head of cabbage.
I know it makes a large quantity, but those cabbage rolls freeze very well. Just freeze in small quantities,, and pull out when you get the munchies.:yesss:

I have been doing some gardening daily. Mostly its just maintenance, watering, fertilizing, and adjustments to my container grown things,,,,, But I had these broken 33 gal plastic barrels. The breaks were on the bottom, and some on the sides. The top 8 inches is perfectly strong, and intact. I cut those rings out with some strong shears, and repurposed to make raised beds. Filled with good screened topsoil, and planted my bag of red onions. I know it is somewhat late,,, in season,,,, but whatever I get,, will be fine.:idunno Had they bag of onion sets looking at me way tooooo long. :old :gig
I also spread the screened topsoil all around those raised beds,, and planted grass seed. Spot was somewhat weed overgrown before I started.
I covered with chicken wire, to keep squirrels out. They immediately seek out fresh soil planting,,, to add their own stash of seeds. (the BOSS that I feed them)

That is a good idea to plant grass.
beats having tall weeds. and with those heavy plastic raised beds, you can use a weed whacker with no problem..
I hope you have good luck with the onions, I see no reason you should not get at least green onions.

I am giving it away today. I greatly prefer cole slaw to cabbage rolls. Cabbage lightly fried in bacon grease is really good too.

I am also not a fan of frozen food when I can have fresh instead.

The mower started right up. I let it run for a few minutes. shut it off and it was flooded. My carb has an electric sensor on the bottom of the bowl. I really don't know the purpose of it.
I assume it is supposed to prevent too much gas from getting into the bowl ?
I was going to clean the carb. but I don't know how to test that sensor. If I take it to a fixit shop, it will cost at least fifty dollars. I can buy a new carb online for about twenty dollars.
that's what I ended up doing with my carb for the rototiller.
I can have one here by Monday.

That is probably the best route to take. :thumbsup
I suspect 2 possible things wrong inside that carburetor.
The float developed, a leak,, and no longer floats. (gasoline filled now)
Some debris got between the needle valve and seat.

If you could take a pix of the electric sensor on bottom of carburetor, I have not encountered such on a small engine yet. ( just for curiosity sake)

I feed BOSS to my chickens, they eat it. Smarter than squirrels I guess.

Unless the squirrels think they are planting future sunflowers for yet more seeds ;)

I think it is their plan. They are better gardeners than Myself. Last year I tried planting some Store Packet sunflower seeds.. Not sure what went wrong,,, but needless to say,, not very successful. :idunno (maybe my location of planting, or seeds got eaten before they did much)
It wont be long, until these sunflower heads get munched up. Every creature needs to eat. :thumbsup

The flowers in that pot are struggling,, but the squirrels seeds are growing like a weed.
There are a few other pots that sprouted sunflowers also. It just adds to the NATURAL FEELING around here.

I have lots of black walnut trees,
as a result I have lots of red squirrels.
I found tiny black walnut trees growing in my garlic beds that I planted last fall. also there are trees growing in random spots around my acreage . I mow them down or pull them out. I found one that I had to use the tractor to pull it out.
I have 2ft x 2ft ceiling tiles in my chicken coop. I had to pull one down.
when I loosened it, about a hundred black walnuts came showering down. the whole ceiling must be filled with them.
Rich, go to amazon or google and look for fuel solenoid and carburetors with fuel solenoids. they will give you a better picture than I can take. I found out that the solenoid is supposed to supress backfiring. I see no real need for such a thing.
this morning I ordered a carburetor from amazon. $30.oo. includes fuel filter, air cleaner, fuel lines and hose clamps. It is supposed to arrive by Sat. I started the mower up without the carb on. as long as I fed it fuel by hand it ran just great. so I guess my valve lapping did OK.
NOTE to myself...in the future install the exhaust manifold before putting the heat shields back on..
thump on the head....
