Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

Usually it is as a planned planting, but we were given a bag of it last month and want to get it in the ground. We'll see how it goes, pull a couple this fall and if it doesn't look good, let it overwinter.

I planted garlic last summer and it just rotted. Very disappointing.

We haven't had that problem before. We plant in loamy well-drained soil in a raised bed. We aren't as hot and humid here as you might be which may make a difference. Maybe the cultivar of garlic makes also a difference. And I don't know what kind of diseases or bugs in the soil might affect garlic, but I guess that is always a possibility too.

We have raised beds but still amending the clay soil. I plan to try this fall.

Garlic here became like a weed for me. It was crazy for a few years as it seeded itself, and multiplied like rabbits. I'm still getting some showing up in my boxes. Crazy stuff.

The weather has been nice enough now that I would be planting the cold weather goodies if I had gotten around to getting the garden ready.

This was an article I found a few years ago when we first planted garlic. Our soil here is sandy loam with a pH of 6.8-7.0 which sounds perfect for garlic. I have to add limetone chips to the soil for plants that like some alkalinity and composted pine chips and peat for blueberries.

Very nice! Great start on the tomatoes...we won't eat a garden tomato until June, and I refuse to buy the gassed, tasteless grocery variety.

I will not buy tomatoes in a store. I love tomatoes too much to eat the ones that come out of a grocery store. I have been eating tomatoes daily now for more than a month. I now have two of the Gold Nugget tomato plants with ripe tomatoes and I am going to have to share them since they are getting out of control.

Started at sunup this morning planting the greenhouse goodies. D managed to get spinach, kale, chard, beets and some potatoes in the ground before the rain started. I fired up the chainsaw (been waiting for a chainsaw project!) and carved out another 10 x 100 ft. addition to our bramble patch, dug up the sumac roots and started tilling when the rain hit. Steady rain in the forcast for the next 3 days. This much rain was somewhat unexpected, and of course I just applied neem oil to the orchard last night! Took a quick look on the hill in front of our house for mushrooms....it will be hard for me to do anything else for awhile.
