Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

My you are brave, Even with water shields I wouldn't dare plant tomatoes for another month.

I am brave. I figured worse case scenario they will rot because it doesn't quite warm up enough. That happened one year and I was able to shove the tops in the ground and they rooted. I like to gamble because our growing season is so short. May to September.

Long range forecast shows 50-60's. I'm willing to risk it. They won't get frost in their kozy kotes. I just need to manage how open the tops should be.

It's turning out to be a slow starting year here. I usually get my tomatoes out by the first of May. Frost date here is May 15. My goal every year is to get tomatoes by the end of June. .I have accomplished that a few times.

Normally we don't get any ripe tomatoes until nearly August without me planting out early, and the use of the kozy kotes. I can't wait that long for fresh tomatoes.

Similar season here. I should probably get some of those water wall things. Sure would be nice to have tomatoes weeks earlier.

Here's last year on May 24. The tomatoes are starting to grow out of the top. They are handy for those late season surprise frosts that we always seem to get here. Frost day is May 15 but you can't trust that.

Those kozy koats look neat. Are they hard to fill?

Planted my peppers today in the garden. I also up potted some of my tomatoes that I will be planting next month when my potatoes are dug.

I do get a bit wet trying to fill them myself. With help they are pretty easy. Put them around a 5 gallon bucket. Someone holds the water reservoirs open, the other works the hose.

Zone 5 update... Most likely we will not get frost anymore
Took some pix. Wanted to share.
This lonely tulip comes up in the lawn. I will dig up and transplant into a flower bead after it finishes blooming. I mow the grass around these flower in that section of lawn now.

These are Hyacinths that grow next to that tulip. I will consider relocating some of them into a flower bed also.

Crabapple in bloom. Last year the frost wiped out the crabapple fruit. This year, looks like it may not get frost.

My Scarlet Hawthorn. Pix did not come out very well focused.
Just LUV and enjoy the blooms in the springtime.

And the Day lilies below are growing very well.

Yes it is. But on the good news front, fruit set before we got our frost. I've got crab apples, pears and peaches growing now. Hopefully the deer and the squirrels will let me have some.

Got a red tomato. Should be ready in a few days. I can already taste it on sandwich with homemade bread

I can put tomato plants in the ground in a couple of weeks.
