"Have you ever done potatoes? Of is this your first year? This is are first year. Pleas tell me what you have to do!"

absolutely nothing!! Just throw them in the ground

I cut mine in a few sections... making sure every section has a couple "eyes" (where they sprout) I bury them about 6 inches from eachother ...about 6 inches deep. Mine have already sprouted. I just use the old potatoes I buy from the store... when one starts to get soft or buds, I toss it in the garden.

I've planted

strawberries
pumpkins fairytale, orange, minis and whites
gourds
raspberries
broccoli
brussel sprouts
cabbage
radishes
corn
sweet peas
carrot
cilantro, dill, basil, thyme
kale and mustard greens

and I've got a ton of heirloom tomatoes and peppers staring at me ready to be planted ...as soon as this rain lets up.

Here's a pic of my garden from two weeks ago... It's amazing how much everything has grown. I harvested some mustard greens tonight for vegetable noodle soop

Well I started out with a nice garden plan... Got most of the plants in and some of the seeds.... and then the rains came.. and then the neighbor's bull ran through... and then a different neighbor's stallion ran through twice!

Now it's supposed to rain again all this week. So hopefully by the end of next week I can clean everything back up and rebed the thing and get the rest planted.

Here's what's in...

Tomatoes I think 5-6 varieties,
peppers 5-6 varieties,
basil,
sage,
corn,
sunflowers
Seeds to be planted:
cantaloupe
cucumber
broom corn
cotton (3 colors)
pie pumpkins
gourds 4-5 varieties
spoon tomatoes (started the seed... got 2 tiny seedlings drowing in a 6 pack)
rosemary
vine peach
tomatillos (if they come up)
ground cherry
various and sundry flowers...
summer squash
okra...
sunflowers and corn again...

Who knows what else. Looks like everything is going to be a bit late since the rain isn't letting up anytime soon.

Thats So Cool! We just have storms here and the hail got to all are plants. We will have to re-start. And its Wisconsin so you never know! LOL on Mon. it was like 70 out and sunny! Got a good burn! LOL And then the next day it could be cold! LOL. We will bw plantins Potatoes, Tomatoes, Peas, Cellerey, Bracole, Celery, Onens, And asparegus. We will be planting more we just dont know what! LOL

Here's mine. I use 10-foot 1 1/2-inchPVC pipes cut into four 30-inch lengths. I put the plants names on them with permanent marker and put them at the start of each of the sections. I only use the name of the vegetable only, e.g., cucumber only, not Bush Champion. That way, I can use the PVC pipes year after year.

My garden is 66x66; that's exactly one-tenth of an acre, great for figuring fertilizer and nutrient needs. I leave 3-foot aisles on each end so that I can turn the rototiller easily. Actually that six feet has become grass that I have to cut as part of the lawn.

Oh and as to the Asparagus question. Asparagus is a perennial so make sure you plant it where you want it to be for the next few years. You harvest the new shoots when they are about 9-12 inches long. After you have harvested a few times you need to let the plant go. It will grow into this ferny feathery huge plant. And then next year your spears will be larger, getting larger each year. After several years you'll need to dig up the crowns, divide them, and then replant.

I am actually trying to get a lot of it put in today. I have some tomatoes in, and lots of spring veggies, like lettuce, onions, chard, beets and peas.

I am digging my beds by hand and it is almost 80 deg here today, so it is slow going! I am taking frequent water breaks. But I hope to get most of the rest of the digging done today, so all I have left is the fun part- planting! I still have beans, corn, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and LOTS of squash to plant.

Have fun, it is so exciting to bring your first harvest in! Go over to The Easy Garden and see what is going on over there! You will learrn a lot reading around the forum there. A LOT of potato info. The link is at the bottom of the page there.

Chicken Girl

Dig a trench about a foot or so deep loosen the soil in the bottom mix some compost and peat cut the seed potatoes to have about 3 eyes apeice let the cut side dry out some for a couple of hours before planting...lay seed pots in trench eyes up and cover about an inch or so water well...as the plant grows continue to cover dont let them get too tall before you cover...mound soil up and over leaves...good luck
come on over to the easy garden there are a lot of answers for beginners and experenced gardeners and as friendly as BYC...
