My buddy owns a small local pet store and sells a lot of basic mammal and reptile supplies but recently had an uptick in livestock costumers upset he doesn't have much (mostly small 10# bags of feed) while most see this and just leave i was wondering if reddit could help. What's some things that you guys feed your chickens (ducks and geese answers are accepted too since those have been asked for).most people just ask if that's all he has and leaves and never clearify what they want or just say they can't wait for delivery they need it today. We are in rural north central Illinois for reference since I hear weather factors food and protein count. Thanks guys.

Your question is somewhat confusing to me.. :idunno
What livestock customers are looking for such small quantities of feed?????
Are they traveling to the store on a skateboard, and are limited on how much they can carry home???
In any event,, you can feed your flock of chickens, ducks, or geese, boiled potatoes in an emergency.
Wild bird seeds are also acceptable,, available at most stores.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and:welcome

I usually buy Food Pellets rather than Crumbles, but otherwise my Chickens aren't picky. I bet it's the Bag size that's the Problem. Even when I had one Chicken I would buy economy size.

Smaller bags are fine if you are only using it as a supplemental feed. The 25-50 lb bags work better and last longer depending on the size of your flock so you aren't running to the store as often. Having a mix of Layer, All-flock, and Chick feed would probably cover most of the general poultry needs. Unless you have more game bird or meat chicken farmers in the general area. The Layer diet isn't necessarily required, but you would need a calcium option available to supplement the layer feed. If I remember correctly, ducks and geese tend to lean more towards the game bird nutrition and require more protein in their diet.

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but poultry need poultry feed. It comes in a few types Layer with calcium included for hens, chick feed, and all flock which is for any age or type of bird but requires a calcium supplement for layers. There are specialty feeds that you can get for ducks or waterfowl, and some species such as guineas do better with a higher protein. This feed is usually call game bird. Since poultry are flock animals bags of feed are usually 40 pounds or larger. Several companies make poultry feed. Kalmbach is the brand we find in a privately owned store here.

I read that as the store only has 10# bags (likely chick starter or the like) and *not* the larger 40/50 lb bags of livestock feed they would be looking to buy :idunno

Rich, sounds like it is a pet store stocking feed for salamanders and gerbils, not a feed store for poultry, horses, or cattle. So little bitty bags.

most people just ask if that's all he has and leaves and never clearify what they want or just say they can't wait for delivery they need it today.
Not exactly sure what you are asking but I think I'd direct them to a local feed store if you have one. There are a lot of different feeds for chickens so it would take a big inventory and storage space to cater to that crowd. Doesn't sound like that is the business your friend is in and he probably doesn't have enough customer base of that type.
