Gardens, anyone? What are you growing this year?

That is one beautiful bed of asaparagus! I will have a bed next yr. --I waited too long to purchase crowns this yr...Dixie

We will have 2 gardens. One will be just for our family. We will have rubarb, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, corn carotts, lettuce, squash, yukon gold potatoes, pole beeans, radishes, Wala, Walla onions. Cucumbers and peas. We also have an apples, plums pears and plum trees from our orchard.
Our 2nd garden is quite large. It is a Victory Garden and it is planted to coordinate a feeding mission that I am co-founder of. This will also feed some of the hispanics who attend our church. They will help plant water, weed and such, and we will give them what they need to take home and feed their families. At the end of the season we will have volunteers come and help can and perserve the bounty! We also will share the eggs from our 11 chickens.

Wowza, NurseNettie, lucky you!!! Left seeds and crops???

That is wonderful, Barney! How in the world did you convince your church to do this? I tried to get our church to do it, as they have a large field behind the church going to waste, but they didn't want to! I think they just don't want to do any work. They have something they call Angel Food Ministry, which is just getting foods at wholesale prices for participating people. I don't call that a ministry... and all the foods are highly processed, microwaveable foods! The people who can't afford food couldn't afford these things either, even at wholesale prices! Tell me more???

We bought a house, barn and 5 1/2 acres of land. They told us there was an asparagus bed established, and some cultivated berries ( blackberries, we think)... We found the berries easily after the snow melted, and wasn't until yesterday we found the asparagus. The snow had apparantly come before they could cut back the growth, and having never grown it before- I didn't recognize it. I told hubby that we couldn't mow or cut anything until all the snow was gone, and we could see what was growing new-- or we might kill off something. He "found" the asparagus yesterday--- some of the tall ones had poked through the dead growth. The photo I showed isn't the half of the bed, either. The other side of the bed has more asparagus and onions ( not sure if they were intentional or wild-- but they all smell heavenly together!!)

You can see the onions in the foreground to the right. The asparagus are to the left- fore and background, and right, background (fewer back there tho)

Hi Beekissed
Well it was a long haul. First my friend Louise and I (I'm Chris...barney is my dog) asked if we could use the church kitchen and feed some hungry folk. That didn't go over very well at first. I went to a church council metting and there was a bunch of folks who dod not want to have these PEOPLE in our around our church. I asked them why? Yjey said, because of this and because of that ...but nothing but they still didn't want to have it here. Then one day we thought of an idea that if we were able to raise the miney to buy the food then we were then not hurting the church budget! That seemed ok with them. So no out of the goodness of peoples hearts and pocket books we cook every Wednedday evening a meal for 100+ people! We even deliver to the shut ins. This November will be our 6th year! Praise His Name!
Money has become tight this past year so, with 15 acres sitting in my back yard I decided to have a Victory Garden! I'm sooooooooo excited about this! Our Feeding mission is called The Mustard Seed connection. We Feed & clothe anyone who walks through the door. I could go one but I don't want to ramble and bore you.

Bore me???? You made me cry! I love it that you are doing this and I wish there were more people like you. Yes, it takes some money to do some things but mostly I feel it takes some work and commitment. Bless you! I want to do this also but I can't do it by myself and I can't seem to stir the flames at this church. They are so complacent in their easy, peaceful lives. They feel safe and content and that is where they want to stay! They won't even grow a garden for themselves, as they have enough money to buy anything they want. They rush home right after church and don't want to fellowship. Don't get me wrong, they are nice people...but complacent. I applaud you!!!!

Beekissed,
Thanks so much for your kind words. You just need to find some folks( Even if you have to go out of the church family. Maybe talking to other folks about it you'll get ideas. Praying Helps! But I found out that we had to do more then pray to make it work. Start small. Ask around the neighborhood. You might find your key player there. Good Luck and God Bless Chris
