It is showing in the kids Today. I find myself explaining basic things to sustain life to the teens my kids bring around. They are fascinated to hear me explain things, and ask me how I know.
Even the knowledge about chickens I have and still learning about. The kids will sit and listen to foe hours.
My children are learning a lot from me, but will also sit and try to learn things on their own too.

I reckon kids will learn same way we did, necessity.

I live in Iowa, and I just finished my second planting of sweet corn today. I am crossing my fingers and toes that it ever makes it to maturity.

As for Walmart not carrying seed at all...some Walmarts have discontinued fabric sales too. Now THAT one hit me hard. Not enough people remember that clothes come from cloth and can be made at home.

I spend 60% of my income passing through Walmart...so that must mean I'm hooked. BUT...has anybody else noticed that all the Walmarts are suddenly turning a nasty brown color? They have this awful yellow/orange color all over my "favorite" Walmart, makes me think of my granddaughter's diaper after eating sweetpotatoes...LOL Can you imagine how much of my money they paid some design firm to come up with that?

What if... nobody pays attention and a company (I shall not name it)
buys up every corn seed in the world and genetically engineers them to only grow one season? Or that same seed company sets forth a disease that only their genetically engineered seed can survive?

I know I sound like a nut case but it is integral that someone is watching. Pass on at least basic knowledge to kids and grandkids.

That's because the store doesn't quite own the seeds. They can send them back to the seed company for a full refund of what doesn't sell, but they only have so long to do it in. Same idea with nursery plants, they have to put them in the trash and say they're destroyed to get credit. For years gardeners have checked next to the dumpsters outside garden stores as some managers will set plants next to them rather than kill the plants.

But don't seeds last a long time? So i don't see the need to get rid of them from the store. I'm puzzled.

Loving that my kids are going to be ok. They may not participate as much as I'd like them to, but if push comes to shove, they're going to remember what mama said and did.

I taught my kids and grand kids where food comes from they have all plaanted weeded sweated and got dirty in my garden...my oldest grand daughter is a school teacher and she is passing the baton on to her 4th grade students...it was such a success that the entire school will be doing victory gardening next year...

It would be bad if it ever comes to that. I was told by an elder that during the great depression, you couldn't find a wild animal. They killed everything they could find for food.

Seeds in the US have a year stamped on them, sort of like an expiration date (yeah I know how goofy that sounds). The stores only have so much time to send them back and get a credit for unsold stock, or else they have to eat the loss. You are correct of course, properly stored seeds can last decades, but that's not exactly the conditions available in most stores.
