Gate for sheep only

Thanks for the many reply!

You are right! Safety is the priority. We have two sheep. They are very smart and good at finding the opportunity to escape. :) So, I trust them. :D

Using spring loaded hinge is an option as well. If it can be set up in a way not to be dangerous but can’t be opened by he wind it will do the trick.

Another option is a kind of wood “curtain”, that maybe pose less risk for any smaller animal. I attach a 3D sketch about is. It’s a few independently swinging wood on a 60x100cm door.

Maybe work.

Wood curtain would be good if the sheep can work out how to use it. The wood slats should whack/smack a chicken back into the enclosed area versus chopping their head off if they tried to follow the sheep. Hopefully......

Although since the wood slats are stiff and do not bend, the wood curtain is going to need to open really high when the sheep go thru it. Panels will be at what.... something between a 45 and a 90 degree angle depending on how tall the gate is, right? Slats will be resting on the back of the sheep as they pass under it. So those wood panels are going to be going fast/with some force when they swing back down to the closed position. Just something to think about.

To minimize the risk of a chicken being chopped in half, I would recommend seeing if you can create it without any sort of bottom horizontal bar/wood frame. That way if anyone gets hit by the slats when they come down, they really will be whacked/smacked back into whichever area they were trying to leave from. Does that make sense? Remove the "pinch" point between the swinging part and the ground so that there is nothing to guillotine the chicken necks.
