You are right! Safety is the priority. We have two sheep. They are very smart and good at finding the opportunity to escape. So, I trust them.
 So, I trust them. 
Using spring loaded hinge is an option as well. If it can be set up in a way not to be dangerous but can’t be opened by he wind it will do the trick.
Another option is a kind of wood “curtain”, that maybe pose less risk for any smaller animal. I attach a 3D sketch about is. It’s a few independently swinging wood on a 60x100cm door.
