Thank you everyone for the welcome ... and for those that had a few extra comments to add.

Since my first post I am delighted to advise that we have had 100% success with putting a light into the chicken coop at dusk. We removed two exterior perches that were in the chicken mesh small run area so it gave them no option to roost outside the house, and every night we place a small battery operated lamp inside the house on the floor. This nicely illuminates the perches above so now all of them troop in at dusk and jump straight onto the perches. Once it is dark we shut the small house door and remove the lamp. We've found they don't get down from their perch once they are up. We know the lamp is the solution as one evening a chicken knocked over the lamp so when I went to shut their door I found them in the semi darkness of the coop, all sitting on the floor. Once the lamp was put back in place I left them for a further 10 minutes - and by the time I came back they were all up on their perches. We have since got a larger light which cannot be knocked over.

So all smiles this end. Really enjoying the thereaputic benefits of chicken gazing - and of course the lovely fresh eggs.
