Geese make me smile... do yours? What do they do?

This morning, after I made my rounds and came back in the house... I peeked out my front door...

I saw the little flock of 5 rubbing their necks on the moist ground and then rubbing their backs and wings (preening). I had to smile, there is NOTHING better than seeing happy geese. They are sooooo pretty, and so fun to watch.

Do you think they saw a mirage? LOL! There is water here I know it!

I would take a picture, but i cannot figure out how to take a shot on my canon s10-is because the sun is coming up and its messing with it...... UGH!


What little things do your geese do to make you smile?

If I haven't fed my flock of 28 their afternoon 3:00 feeding, Ranaya herds everyone to the glass doors and starts honking as loud as she can while knocking on the glass with her bill until I come out with the food. She gets quite the little riot going on out there.

She also follows me around while I do my chores, talking to me, trying to put in her mouth anything that comes from my hands, like fresh bedding, weeds... you name it.

Yes, Ranaya is my bold loud beauty. When I opened up the front last fall so the flock could weed the vegie beds and eat all the slugs, she would steal my shoes from the front porch and drag them into the yard so she could get my shoelaces out. She has a shoelace fetish. It's the only way she'll sit in my lap... I sit with my legs crossed on the ground, put her in my lap, and she can pick at my shoelaces till her heart is content. She also likes to swallow my hair. It's sorta yucky, but she has so much fun doing it, that I let her... as long as she's sitting in my lap.

Rommy drags everything all over the yard. Big sticks, large rocks, gloves, shoes... you name it. Eventually he tries to put them in a waterer for better chewing. Every few days when I clean the waterers, it's like a treasure hunt, "oh, there's the glove I lost," "I don't remember leaving a screwdriver out here," "Look, it's a lego!" He's like a puppy, I swear.

I saw Rommy and Ranaya mating in the pond a few days ago. Unlike the ruckus created when Rommy would try mating with the ducks, he was so very gentle and playful with her. Ranaya for once floated around quietly and coyly with the patience of a saint while Rommy figured it all out. They were both incredibly beautiful and again I was reminded why I love watching these awesome birds.

The other day I placed some straw in the nesting drums(plastic 55 gal) only to see them reach in and place the straw around them while standing in front of the nest

...I'm thinking you are supposed to go in the drum to do that...Couple of days go by and I am watching them from my living room window, NOW, they are in the drum picking up the straw they took out the other day and placing back in the nest

...I could not help but laugh out loud. OK.. they have figured out what the drums are for !!

Guess are quite comical and klutzy.
They sometimes act real bossy and try to bully my ducks
around but if one of the ducks decides to defend itself by fighting
back the geese literally scream like little girls and run away all frightened.
They are quite blind me thinks too.
If I wait too long to put them in the barn at night and its a little dark
they stumble and walk into walls and act all discombobulated.
It makes me laugh when they do somersaults in their pool.

I did drill 1 inch holes in the top back of the drums, also drilled a few holes in the bottom of the drums.

I have a small flock of Toulouse geese. 2 ganders-5 geese Well, of course there is one dominant gander who has hogged all of the girls for himself. So the lonely boy has taken a shining to ME. I am smiling here, but I was never so embarrassed by the attentions of a goose! He is adorable. I call him Shadow because he follows me everywhere.

He talks to me non-stop and lets me squat down and hold him close, I ruffle his chest feathers and he nibbles my clothes....when I let him go he walks off and stretches his wings and announces his conquest of me. Just like the other gander does when he has had his way with one of his girls. LOL

I had a chest cold that produced a very loud cough. It took me a while to realize that every time I coughed my gander-love was honking back! He stands in the yard hoping to get a glimpse of me through the living room window.

When I am outside working I make sure that I do not turn my back to him because I know that if he ever jumped on my back it wouldn't be goose poop I'd have to worry about stepping in!

I have found a home for the dominant gander and two of his girls. I am hoping that Shadow will then take over the remaining three geese, thereby getting over me.
