This has happened to 3 young geese. 3 different years. During mid-summer. One recovered somewhat , has some issues with gait , but otherwise healthy. One I put down and did an autopsy on and didn't see anything abnormal, organs all looked healthy This year another young gandar 'has it'. They start having difficulty walking, will flip over sometimes, and rest a lot, they still have an appetite and try to swim and preen. (they have some pools, not dug ponds or lakes.)....Ruled out genetics. All I can come up with is something like West Nile virus, or mild botulism, or some kind of toxin. I do not use sprays on my property anywhere the fowl have access. I only mound treat fire ants. I have a variety of grasses, weeds, trees and a few holly...this is rural farmland area in the South....supplemented feed is grains (corn, wheat, millet and poultry layer). They are a rare breed and it is rather heartbreaking....anyone have a clue?

Living in the south maybe you should check into West Nile

Look in search for West Nile.

Someone on Duck thread just had a duckling die of West Nile.
yeah, I am thinking it is a possibility... however the other goose breed, and none of my ducks have had anything like this, and there are many of them... That is why I am thinking more like a toxic plant, and they were all around a year and young and eat the wrong thing.

Follow up. I gave Ivermectin a week or so ago ,in case it was a parasite (asked Holderreads) . I am going to put both down. The male is very uncoordinated. The female is a curious case. She 'got this' last summer. She recovered about 75-80%.She could run, walk, eat and even flap wings. Unfortunately, the other geese, especially the top gandar would chase her off...(younger geese didn't care). But she has now "relapsed", and is much worse. So for 9-10 months she was pretty ok. So I am thinking it is a toxin that is related to 90+ days. (Did I mention that the farmers spread chicken manure ; truckloads on the fields nearby? and we get thousands of flies? They also spread tons of chemicals on the field 300 or so feet away...or maybe it is the feed... or something they eat in mid-summer.... or a weakness of immunity in this breed which has a small gene pool....
