as for your yard - they need shelter and altho they are MOSTLY predator-proof.. they should be locked up at nite. do you have a shed or something?? they'll fight a dog and hold their own for a good long while, but a dog thats bent on killing them will. so is probably more about keeping predators out than keeping them in. unlike ducks, even tho geese need water (a big tub or better yet a $7 kidding pool), they arent superduper wet and wont ruin your yard. with a pool and a shelter they'll be happy as clams.

Basically those lobe things under their bellies, are just lobe things under their bellys. lol Male and female both have them.

Darnit! i wish i had an easy way to sex them

yikes! careful with this... my gander is a hen killer. at least one confirmed kill and 3 counts of 'attempted'! and he gets really aggressive around breeding season. i keep mine penned off with just a 4ft fence... so it would be easy for you to use a hog panel to section off part of your hen house
:)

for a while we used a big ol metal laundry tub and they could get in it just fine :)

honestly, they are such easy keepers.. if you already have poultry you'll be pleased as punch!

(plus they are great at keeping the grass down)

and the babies are you cute... wowza... you'll be in LOVE!

:)

I have had mine get over the fence, but the reason is the massive wind we get here. By themselves (when they run and flap their wings) they can only get a foot or so off the ground. When our winds are really kickin' I've had a goose or two get blown, yes, BLOWN, over the fence. They proceed to freak out as they are separated from the flock.

Their mental breakdown ends when I pick them up and put them back over the fence. I once witnessed a buff american gander blown at least three feet up and six feet sidewise to land on the other side of the fence, hence I figured out how the occasional goose was ending up out of the pasture (to their obvious displeasure).

AT ULTASOL

Wow i hope theyre alright im sure they didnt like that one bit lol and im SURE that woulda been a SIGHT to see!

ultasol - hey!

i've been laughing all morning about your blow away geese! thats hilarious!

SQ - should be good.. just watch how they do...and be warned there is nothing cuter than baby geese!! we call ours "meeps" for the little noise they make.

:)

OFGirl, I call my babies the "meeps" too. Somewhere on my computer I have a video of my goslings from late June, shortly after hatch. I kept the three girls, and ate three of the four boys.

I laughed too at the gander. He was obviously in shock at 'flying' over the fence. Poor dear. He landed easily, however, no crash!
